TE KUITI RACING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

MUNSTER WINS THE CUP

The Te Kuiti Racing Club experienced a most successful gathering on Saturday when their annual meeting attracted a large attendance of sportsmen, the special trains being well patronised, a strong contingent of Auckland enthusiasts journeying to the fixture. The weather was fine, and with the course in excellent order some high-class sport was witnessed. Good fields were the order of the day, and a number of close and exciting finishes were witnessed. The Cup was won by the Waikatoowned Munster, who defeated the favourite, Royal Irish, by a neck after an interesting race. The meeting was conducted in a manner which gave universal satisfaction, the consideration extended the club’s patrons being keenly appreciated. The energetic secretary, Mr. J. H. Trinnear, did all in his power to ensure the success of the meeting, and has good reason to feel satisfied at the result of his efforts. The totalisator investments amounted to £19,329, as compared with £18,613 10s. last year. Backers would not hear of the defeat of the Hon. E. W. Alison’s candidate, Golden Petal, in the Maiden Handicap, and the son of Obligado accordingly monopolised the betting on the race. The favourite was quickly in the lead and never gave his supporters any anxiety, winning as he liked by two lengths from Explode, with Gold Bird two and a-half lengths away, third. Cambridge was the elect of backers in the Otorohanga Handicap, with Flying Gowrie and Elyan best supported of the other seven starters. M. D. O’Shea hopped the favourite out smartly, and, attended by Flying Gowrie, acted as pacemaker throughout, the pair practically having the finish to themselves, Cambridge scoring a length victory. Monocrat was a couple of lengths away, third, and Sans Gene fourth.

Royal Irish, Housewife, Munster and Empire was the order of favouritism for the quartette which came out to do battle in the Te Kuiti Cup. Both Housewife and Empire proved unruly at the post, but a good start was eventnally effected. Housewife was first to show out, Royal Irish getting the worst of the start. Housewife continued in the lead racing along the back, but Munster displaced the daughter of Kenilworth racing across to the straight entrance, and was still in the lead when they turned for home, Royal Irish being at the head of the other trio. A splendid race resulted in Munster lasting long enough to gain a neck victory from Royal Irish, with Housewife half a length away, third.

The Hack Hurdles was contested by a field of eight, Mahzoltov counting most support, with Signature and Lady Lyddite both in keen demand. Lady Lyddite was first to break the line, but soon gave way to the favourite, who carried on the running until displaced by Plenipotent just before the straight was entered. The latter, finishing strongly, won by a length and a-half from the favourite, three lengths after whom came Signature.

Mill o’ Gowrie was a staunch favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, and the daughter of Glengowrie duly captured the stake in attractive fashion, leading from the barrier rise and Avinning handily by a length and a-quarter from Garryowen, with Rockfield a length and a-half away, third. The Te Kumi Handicap saw the inconsistent Step elevated to. pride of position in the betting, with Explode, Whitehall and Monocrat all in strong request. The favourite failed to flatter his supporters at any stage,, the winner turning up in Explode, who was in a handy position throughout, and in a sterling finish prevailed from Whitehall by a head. Tama-a-roa was a length away, third. Mill o’ Gowrie was again saddled up to contest the Welter Handicap, and despite her substantial impost of 11.1 found most support among the six starters, Lord Kenilworth and Hyllus being the only others whose prospects were seriously entertained. The favourite shot out when the tapes lifted, and was still in charge as the field straightened up for the run to the post. Her increased poundage, however, told once the real struggle commenced, and she was

beaten out of a place after a splendid finish, in which Hyllus, Lord Kenilworth and Debutante joined. Victory went to Hyllus by a head from Lord Kenilworth, a length after whom came Debutante, with the favourite fourth.

There were six starters for the concluding event, the Farewell Handicap, the Waikato-owned and trained King Abbey being a firm favourite, with Ohinewairua, Taiamai and Garryowen all solidly supported. Taiamai was prominent throughout, and though challenged by Garryowen in the straight always looked a winner, and had a length and a-half advantage of his rival when the post was reached, Gaycium being a similar distance away, third. King Abbey was fourth. The results were: —
