Ellerslie Items.

Ellerslie racecourse was very busy on Saturday morning. As usual, the tracks opened at 5 a.m., with Mr. W. Kemp as the early bird, but his team, Emerald Hill, Mary Bruce and Co., were on the easy list. Spanner, one of the favourites for the Stewards’ Handicap at the Takapuna meeting, had Hineamaru and Sans Gene as pacemakers. The latter pair could make no impression on the brilliant son of The Nut, who registered 49 4-ssec for four furlongs. General Stephens and Escape had a rough up over five furlongs. The paiiran home together without the full pressure being on in Imin ssec. Lightning, from a semi-standing start, finished up strongly at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4sec. Blue Cross, with Lombardi to assist him, got to the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec. The Takapuna Cup horses All Talk and Killard ran a mile and a-quarter, Killard having the best of the weights. They finished close together. The round took linin 53 3-ssec. Fabriquette followed the pair, registering a fairly gpod gallop over .srx furlongs. r bThe diminutive Monocrat and a c&mT&Ai'on were at top at the ev.fi of four rlongs, which they left behind in „ " Whitehall, Finkop and another ran niojig on the bit. Newlant was on the easy list. She eems very fit at the present. ( - Lady Una has become an outlaw on ’the tracks, and cannot be induced to go near the convincing ground. After breakfast New Zealand and Waitapai had a six furlong spin, registering Imin 18 2-ssec. Marble Star and Sanacre put a tan circle past in Imin 56 l-ssec. Pierrot seemed to revel in a six furlong gallop alone on the tan in Imin 19 4-ssec. Mahzoltov led Gluterreno, with Master Regel toiling in the rear in a round over the hurdles. The time taken was much the fastest of the morning. Stilts was too good for his stable mate, Actrice (daughter of Peggy Pryde) over four furlongs. The time was under 50sec. Ma Copper, who has been absent from the tracks for a few days as the result of striking a hurdle, was indulged in easy pace work on the tan. Downham and Waiuta ran clean away from Hyllus and fought out a battle royal at the end of six furlongs in a shade under Imin 16sec. The gallop stood out alone on the morning. Makarana, alone, covered two rounds of the schooling battens, clouting one very hard. Mistee asserted his speed over Peneton at the finish of a round over the schoolers. The son of Zimmerman looks like being useful. Formalin pleased the onlookers by the way she fought out five furlongs in company with a stable mate of Hyllus. The pair finished together, registering Imin 4sec. Analogue finished up in a manner which holds out little hope of him being taken to Taumarunui. The gallop of the previous Tuesday morning has probably settled the handsome little bay, who is very sore. Lady Lyddite and Orpheum had a schooling lesson in company, giving a fairly good exhibition over the timber. The former has lightened up since the Bay of Plenty meeting. Plenipotent and Thrace went over the hurdles. The latter did not seem to relish the task and finished up by rushing past the obstacle. The bout was fairly fast. The erratic Empire surprised the course watchers by downing Cynic (a placed horse in the Auckland R.C. Handicap two years in succession) over a tan circuit. Cynic did not worry to try and catch Empire.
