WANGANUI.

Zola to Start at Waverley—W. Rayner’s Team for Masterton and Wellington Meetings—F. Tilley Takes Quartette to Opaki—Client to Contest Masterton Cup. WANGANUI, Monday. W. Rayner has withdrawn Zola fiom his engagements at Masterton, and the gelding will be kept for the Waverley meeting, where he may be started in the Cup in preference to the hurdles. Rayner will take the other members of his team, consisting of Zela, Pennon, Farce, Golden Bubble, and Rose Queen, to Masterton and to Trentham. The three last-named are two-year-olds owned by Mr. G. M. Currie, who also owns Pennon. The youngsters are going well on the tracks, and so far as looks go will be hard to beat amongst the youngsters, giving every evidence of having been well cared for in the stable and well trained. Rose Queen, the daughter of King Rufus —Roscommon, is engaged in the Trial Stakes at Opaki on the first day, and the other two in the Juvenile Handicap. Golden Bubble is the name of the fine-looking colt by Absurd — Catchfly, while the filly by Absurd has been named Farce. They appear to be fairly well forward in their preparation, and behave themselves like old hands at the barrier. Rayner has since decided not to take Golden Bubble, but the others of his team will be seen out at Masterton. Pennon is engaged in the Telephone Handicap the second day at Masterton and in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham. She also figures in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton, in which she is in at the minimum. She is moving very freely just now, and if the racing at Masterton and Trentham does not have any ill-effect on her, the English-bred filly will not disgrace herself in the big six-furlong •event, as she is remarkably fast over the distance, and it is in her favour that she is a very quick beginner. H. Johnston intends starting Vance, the four-year-old daughter of Advance —Daisy Clipper, at Waverley. She is very fast over a short distance, and should run prominently in whatever she starts. Starengo has been left in the Flying Handicap at Masterton, in which event he has 6.7. The gelding is in good fettle, though his training was slightly interfered with owing to a leg swelling as the result of a kick. He is now all right again, and H. Rayner is hopeful of picking up a race shortly with the son of Marengo. F. Tilley will leave Fordell to-mor-row with Client, Acre, Bayberry, and Oratress. The former has been left in the Cup. and though he has a big weight (9.13), he will be hard to beat. It may be, however that he will need a race or two before being at his

very best, although he is shaping well on the tracks. It is understood that the son of Elevation will be a starter in the Champion Plate at Trentham, but whether or not he will go to the post in the New Zealand Cup or be reserved for the Canterbury Cup has not yet been decided upon. From all accounts Acre, Bayberry and Oratress are hitting out well in their work at Fordell, and they will carry the confidence of their connections in their events at Masterton. Acre will probably be all the better for a race or two, and he should be seen to more advantage at Trentham. W. Higgins is keeping Castlewood going steadily in view of the hurdles at Waverley. This gelding is a very fine jumper, but he appears to lack pace. J. Peachey intends taking both Undecided and Hupana to Waverley. The former is in the hurdles at 9.3, and if he is ever going to do any good at the game he should win this event. Hupana is in the Brewer Han dicap at 7.6. She looks a bit rough on it, but she can gallop fast when in the humour. Mr. H. Coyle should have the satisfaction of getting a good response from owners as a result of his very careful adjustment of the ’weights for the Waverley-Waitotara meeting, and some good racing may be looked for at this very popular meeting, which can be depended upon to attract a big crowd of Labour Day holidaymakers. _ ;
