WANGANUI.

Rayner’s Quartette for Masterton Meeting—Client’s Masterton Cup Engagement—J. Peachey’s Team— F. Tilley’s Trio for Opaki—Hyginas Galloping Freely—Waverley-Waito-tara Meeting—Nobleman to Compete at Masterton and Wellington Fixtures.

WANGANUI, Monday. W. Rayner has Zola engaged in the Welter at Masterton on the first day and in the hurdles on the second day. He has been given 7.12 in the Welter, in which he should run well if started, as he is in good fettle. He was put over four hurdles on Thursday, when he jumped well, and he has only to keep sound to pick up another hurdle race or two soon. In addition to Zola, Rayner will take Zela, Pennon and Rose Queen to Masterton. The last-named is a two-year-old daughter of King Rufus —Roscommon, and is owned by Mr. G. M. Currie. The sister to Common Law is well forward in condition. She has shown that she is fairly smart, and she moves away from the barrier in good style. She is also engaged at Trentham. Pennon is doing good solid work, and such a quick beginner is sure to be hard to beat in whatever she starts. She is engaged in the Telephone Handicap the second day. Zela is also doing solid work, and looks as fit as ever she has been. Client will probably make his first appearance for the season in the Masterton Cup, in which, however, he has a big weight—9.l3. He has been doing good work, but no doubt will be all the better for a race or two, and should be at his best in the Champion Plate at Trentham. He will be meeting some good ones in the latter event, but the son of Elevation will probably hold his own with the best over a mile and a-quarter. He has been paid up for in the New Zealand Cup, but that he will face the starter in that event is by no means certain. Undecided and Hupana are now both inmates of J. Peachey’s stable, and are in steady work. Peachey also has Miss Fisher and a gelding by Beragoon in work. Golden Bubbles, the big colt by Absurd —Catchfly, which was suffering for a time from a bruised heel, is now going along all right again. This youngster looks like turning out a topnotcher. Acre, Bayberry, and Oratress will be raced at Masterton by F. Tilley. The former is galloping well, and is likely to win a race or two before the season is far advanced. Oratress looks all the better for her race at Marton, while Bayberry is moving along nicely. The son of Bayardo did not run up to expectations last season, but he should be seen to more advantage in his coming engagements. He is engaged in the Ruamahunga Hack race at Masterton at 7.9. Hyginas is said to be galloping in fine style at Hawera, where J. Fryer has the gelding in work. .The son of Hymettus reads well in the Flying

Handicap at Masterton at 7.6, but there are a lot of good ones engaged and the race will take some winning. There is every prospect of the Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club scoring a record success with its annual meeting on Labour Day, judging by the splendid nominations received. This club’s meetings have become very popular with racegoers on this coast, and as the racing is always most interesting a big crowd is sure to attend the forthcoming meeting provided the weather is fine. The hack sprint events have, as usual, drawn great fields, and one or two big dividends may be looked for in these events. There are fourteen fair performers in the Cup, including Rewi Poto, Depredation, Dingle, White Blaze, and Hyginas, and an interesting race should be witnessed. There are some good sprinters in the Brewer Handicap, another open race, while there is a good class of hacks engaged in the other events. Altogether some fine racing is promised on Labour Day, and as the club’s officials are out to make the gathering a most enjoyable one, there is little doubt but that success will crown their efforts. Although Nobleman has been withdrawn from the New Zealand Cup, the Sir Laddo gelding is doing good work at Bulls, and will probably be seen out at Masterton, where he is engaged in the Flying on the first day at the nice weight of 7.13. The race at Masterton should do him good for his Trentham engagements. Starengo is moving along nicely on the tracks, and as he is in at the minimum in the Flying at Masterton, H. Rayner has every inducement to take him down. If he could show a return to his best form the gelding would be very hard to beat in some of the forthcoming races, now that he is so low down in the weights. The racing clubs of the Wanganui Metropolitan District, comprising Foxton, Manawatu, Ashhurst, Feilding, Rangitikei, Marton, and Wanganui, have unanimously decided to cut out all luncheons at their race meetings and only serve morning and afternoon tea. It is understood that this step has been decided upon on account of the high price demanded by the Manawatu and West Coast Caterers’ Association for the supply of luncheon.
