CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

CONCLUDING DAY. COALITION WINS STEEPLECHASE. (From Our Christchurch Correspondent.) The weather was perfect for the conclusion of the jumpingcarnivalat Riccarton on Saturday, and there was a huge attendance. Having benefited by the first days racing the track was in improved order, but though larsre fields were seen out m most oi the events, the sport was hardly up to expectations. Speculation was particularly brisk, the day'S turn reaching £67,214, which constitutes a record for the course, a ? d thp total for the meeting up to £127,651, as against £106,796 last y6 Gaekwar showed still further unproved form by putting down a fairly strong field in the Aylesbury Steeplechase, for which his chance was less esteemed than that of Ormesby. The latter made most Of the running, Xing really well. Two furlongs trorn home Gaekwar and Bore came along with strong challenges, and having more foot than his opponents Gaekwar scored handily by two lengths from the Riccarton representative. On his two showings at the meeting Gaekwar should take higher honours in more select company next season. Paremata fell when going strongly, while Transfer broke down, and Dardanelles refused. On his first day’s running Warform was served up a staunch favourite for the Redcliffs Handicap, and scored in decisive style. Jingo looked likely to get home at the distance, where he had a useful lead, but when tackled by Warform the leader failed to put much heart into his work and was nearly beaten by Turpenite for second money. Comment repeated her Winter Cup tactics by jumping out first in the August Handicap and setting a merry pace till within a furlong of the post. There All Over, Form Up, Ibex and Killjoy came with strong challenges and the leader at once retired. Outstaying the opposition All Over scored by nearly a length from the unlucky Ibex,' with Form Up and Killjoy handy. The winner’s form was in marked contrast to that shown by him in the Winter Cup, in which he was one of the last to finish. Form Un performed creditably under his big weight, but Cardrona, the favourite, never managed to get into the fighting line. Most of the Grand National horses were seen, out again in the Beaufort Steeplechase, the newcomers being Arlington and Sylva. Arlington and Merry Lad, who changed hands after the first day’s racing, acted as pacemakers till the latter came to grief half a mile from home. With heads in line for the post Coalition, who had always been third or fourth, joined Arlington in the lead. Coming to the last fence Coalition crowded Arlington on to the wing, and as a result the latter missed the obstacle. This spoilt what promised to be an interesting finish, for though Yellow and Black came with a great run on the flat Coalition won comfortably. Sylva finished a good third, followed by Nita, Collector and Zarkoma. St. Elmn turned a seven at the sod wall. Crib stopped at the Kennels double. Evidently his first day’s race had improved Coalition, for he ran a much better race, but Collector’s jumping was so erratic as to quite spoil his chance. The scrummage between Arlington and Coalition formed the only disagreeable feature of the meeting. To the general run of spectators it looked as if Coalition’s rider had been guilty of unfair tactics, and surprise was expressed at no objection being lodged. The incident did not escape the notice of the stipendiary stewards, but after hearing the evidence of the two jockeys concerned they rightly came to the conclusion that Arlington’s rider brought trouble on himself, a fact that he was generous enough to admit under examination. Hylans and Tornea looked like fighting out an interesting finish in the Spreydon Hurdles till the former came down at the last fence. Just when Tornea looked to be winning easily, Seville came along with a wet sail and defeated him in the run to the post by three lengths. Of the others, Rose Blush gave the best Despite his signal failure on Thursday, backers again made Gang Awa’ favourite for the Sydenham Hurdles. After being well up in the early stages he was the first horse beaten, and retired a long way from home. Jeannot and Fisher were prominent all through, and the latter was first

into line for home. He raced on gamely enough, but. when it came to the .finish he could not foot it with Kauri King. The latter was all the better for his race on Thursday, but Gluetanus and Thrace were evidently knocked out by their earlier exertions. Jingo scored a well-deserved win in the Woolston Handicap, leading practically from start to finish. After a great final effort Ibex cut down all but the winner, while just on his girth came Bomb, Missouri, and Silver and Black. In the concluding event Thaddeus put up . a brilliant performance by cutting down those in front of him at the distance and winning handsomely. Bedford and John Barleycorn, two favourites, were never sighted. The' results were: — AYLESBURY STEEPLECHASE of 200 sovs. About two miles and a-half. 2 — L. H.
