As a result of Wellwood falling at the water jump in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase on the opening day of the Dunedin winter meeting, his pilot, F. Gray, sustained a broken collarbone. It is interesting to chronicle the fact that F. Gray was making his debut as a rider over hurdles at the Dunedin meeting, at which he experienced a large measure of ill-luck. St. Cletus fell with him in the Hurdles, Vascular came down at the first jump in the Otago Steepleches, and Wellwood crashed through the guard fence at the water jump to make a total of three rides and three falls.
