WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB.

WINTER MEETING. The winter meeting of this oldestablished and progressive club -commences to-day (Thursday), and it can be taken for granted that the fields will be good and the racing of a very interesting character, though some disappointment will be felt at the absence from the meeting of a few horses' that were looked upon as likely to be competing. The fact that there will be. a large number of run-ners—-probably as many as thirty during the two days—that are at present engaged in events at the Great Northern meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, and that some that will race at Wanganui are engaged also at the Otaki meeting, lends added interest to the proceedings on Thursday and Saturday. The weights are out for the Auckland and Otaki meetings, and winners are subject to penalties. The following are the acceptors in the seven events: — BOROUGH HANDICAP. Six furlongs.

From the nineteen in the Borough Handicap the Fordell-trained colt, Coolpan, is sure to have many friends. Form Up does not commence well enough to give him a good chance on a mile course on the turn, but Inah is a good beginner and Chimera is very consistent, and so also Lady General if she has got over her soreness. Simonides will give them all a task if he has a bit of luck in getting away nicely, but, as often stated in these columns, a straight or nearly straight course suits him best on account of his mouth giving trouble. Dasher Boy, old Idealism and perhaps Foeman may be the hardest to beat in the Hack Steeplechase. In the Wanganui Steeplechase there are a dozen, and a good betting race it promises to be. Master Strowan, the Foxton representative, with a National to his credit, is reported well. Braeburn, the Hawke’s Bay hope, has had a littlei racing over hurdles to assist his preparation, but is not too sound. Gluepot has had schooling, and following on autumn racing was just about as well as he could be got when he left Auckland. Coalition and Bore are a likely pair to give a good account of themselves, and one or other of the pair may carry off the thick end of the stake. Sandy Paul, Record and Arlington should each have outside chances at least. Thei last-named would have something more than that if it were over hurdles at the weights, but

should jump a country. The presence of the veterans The Chief, Golden Glow and Marton, and of the consistent ex-hunter Nita, who came nearly winning last year, will be interesting, and the three last-named will not be without friends. The Kaitoke Hurdle Race looks hard to pick, with about half the field making a first appearance over obstacles. With such flat performers as Fionnuala, Gang Awa’, Dingle, Kauri King, Munster, Midnight Star and Hupana engaged it is possible that some of these may develop into usefulness at the game. Of the performers, Golden Glade, Lord Ainslie, Gold Fran and Paul Moore may take most beating. If Ju-jitsu has gone on improving since the Feilding meeting he may run a fair race. He looked backward there. Golden Glade claims an engagement in the Century Hurdles, and having been paid up for in preference to stable companions in that race may be entrusted with the longer task, and with Vacuum and Otter would ensure the race being one of the fastest ever run on the course. Colorado, Pursefiller and Sir Fisher will probably carry most support. Of the Connolly Handicap field of fifteen, Cleft, Paraoa and Tressida will probably be hardest to dispose of, and in the Purua Hack Handicap Hexton, Winning Shot and perhaps All Over may prove a useful trio in a field that looks likely to furnish a fine race.
