MANAWATU TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. MISS HAVOC WINS BIG EVENT. The. Manawatu Trotting Club have excellent reasons to be pleased with the wide measure of success attained in connection with their annual gathering, which took place on the Awapuni Racecourse on Friday in perfect weather, and in the presence of a very large attendance. The officials of the club spared no effort in making the meeting as attractive and enjoyable to their patrons as one could possibly desire, and their commendable enterprise met with a deserving reward, the gathering eclipsing all former fixtures of the club in every respect. Excellent fields were on hand to contest the various events, and the contests provided were of a keen and interesting description. Mr. Arthur Manson, the capable secretary, had charge of the arrangements, and did everything in his power to ensure the convenience and pleasure of the club’s many patrons, the meeting passing off in a manner fully in keeping with the high standard invariably associated with metropolitan gatherings. The starting was in the hands of Mr. A. Keith, who got his fields away satisfactorily, while Mr. F. S. McRae acted as judge, giving his decisions with promptness and accuracy. That Mr. F. W. Edwards had ably summed up the merits of the competitors was apparent by the size of the fields and the interesting racing that was witnessed. The totalisator investments amounted to £18.803, as against £9492 last year, an increase of £9311. Eleven came out for the Maiden Handicap, Plain Rose, Lady Somerset and Lady Irving receiving most attention from backers. Reindeer had charge from Wild Lass and Rejoice passing the stand the first time, and the trio named practically had the race to themselves, finishing in thaat order, the judge’s verdict being a three lengths victory for Reindeer. Plain Rose mixed it badly, and eventually finished in last place. Proud Child was the popular fancy for the Stewards’ Handicap, with Inora and Jessie Dillon most in favour of the other ten candidates. The public were right in their judgment, for after Silver Locks had made the early running, Brankin took the favourite to the front and maintained his lead to the finish, gaining a three lengths victory from Hal Junior, with Jessie Di’lon third. Nine horses came out for the big harness event, the Manawatu Trotting Club Handicap, A. Pringle’s representative, Dillon Direct, being the elect of backers, with Kate Zolock and Sally Brass next best fancied. Dillon Direct was always handy throughout, but Miss Havoc always had a slight advantage from the son of Harold Dillon, and once the straight was entered she outpaced the favourite and won by three lengths. Sally Brass was half a length away third and Fair Puritan fourth. Another warm favourite in Lady Somerset had to be content with second honours in the Ladies’ Bracelet, Inora getting into her stride quickly and establishing a lead which her opponents had little chance of reducing, a victory by three lengths being somewhat easily gained from Lady Somerset, with Tofua third. Little Jewel was regarded as most likely to score in the President’s Handicap, in which Miss Havoc and Proud Spring, both of whom had been returned winners earlier in the day, were

also accorded good support. The trio named had the race to themselves until Little Jewel faded out of it, an exciting finish resulting in Proud Spring winning by half a length from Miss Havoc, with Hedgewood third. Peter Bell, the favourite, let his supporters down in the Palmerston North Handicap, after flattering their hopes over the final stages, a sterling finish being witnessed between a quartette of the candidates, Succory securing the verdict by half a length from Loch Lomond, with Plunder a length away third, and the favourite fourth. Sally Brass, Molly Chimes and Jessie Dillon was the order of favouritism for the Farewell Handicap, in which speculation was heavy. Molly Chimes left her mark smartly, and never left the issue in doubt, winning without being extended by half a dozen lengths from Trooper Dillon, with Wild Daisy three lengths away third.
