SOUTHERN STAGE NOTES.

(By

“Lorgnette.”)

WELLINGTON, February 25.

Jack Waller’s “Look Who’s Here” Revue Company have been playing to good business during the past week at the Grand Opera House. The members have become great favourites with Wellington playgoers, and their season in the windy city ought to be a successful one. There was quite a large gathering of theatricals in Manners Street last Tuesday morning, and there was considerable speculation regarding the cause. Enquiries elicited the information that two members of Jack Waller’s “Look Who’s Hwe” Com-

pany had got married, and desired to keep the fact a secret. The secret leaked out, however, hence the gathering of the theatrical folk, and the jubilation. The contracting parties were Miss Marjorie Sims and Mr. Richard White.

The attendances at the Town Hall organ recitals have improved greatly of late. The programme submitted last Tuesday evening by Mr. Bernard Page included Greig’s “Peer Gynt Suite” (op. 6). The captivating pastoral melody of the first movement, “Morning Mood,” was made to seem redolent with the fragrance of the pine trees. The weird harmonies of “Ase’s Death,” and the Eastern atmosphere of “Anitra’s Dance,” received skilful interpretation. The strange finale, “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” which works up on a four-bar theme to a terrific climax, evoked prolonged applause. Guilmont’s “Sonata (No. 8) in A” (op. 91) was rendered in masterly style. Cesar Franck’s “Prelude, Fugue, and Variation” (op. 18), was a pleasing item in which the organist infused all the tenderness, mysticism, and grace of the opening movement. Wolstenholme’s “Andantino,” and De bussy’s “Andante ” (from string quartette) were also effectively performed. The recital is one of the best that Mr. Page has yet given us.
