HAWKE’S BAY.

Notable Additions to J. Oldfield’s String—lmpediment to Have Brief Spell—Death of Centre.

NAPIER, Monday

A nice stamp of a two-year-old filly by Demosthenes out of Lady Atholine has joined the string receiving instruction from J. Oldfield at Napier Park. She is a full-sister to Harpaulus, who at the recent sale of thoroughbreds in Christchurch was sold for 200 guineas. The youngster is the property of Mr. W. Desha, who has lately joined the ranks of owners in Hawke’s Bay, and who owns a half-share in Karo, the younger fullsister to Impediment. Oldfield has further added to his students by the return of Multum, who has been enjoying the rest cure for some time past.

Impediment is to have an easy time for a couple of months, and it seems only reasonable to anticipate that the let-up from activity on the try-out w’ll benefit her greatly, for there is no denying the reality that she has been kept busy of late. _ After Trials had scored in the President’s Handicap at Hastings on Tuesday, Mr. J. W. White, owner of the gelding, invited the members of

the press to celebrate the victory over some bottles of wine. The “bubbly” was duly consumed with expressions of the hope that lots more wins would fall to the lot of the son of Tribulation aiid Opaline, and also that owner White and traindr P. Smith would be on deck to witness the achiev©--ments.

Sea Lord was submitted for sale at Hastings on Friday, but as no one seemed inclined to go to the reserve (200gn§.), “iloth : ng doing” had to be reported. Mr. J. H. Colebourne, wild has been hav ng a rocky period lately, as he has been lad aside from the after effects of a serious operation, was able to be present last week to assist at the holiday fixture of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, Of which body he is a steward. Ml*. T. E. Whelch, of Wanstead, has now wOh 1200sovs. With Multiply, who some time back he secured for a very moderate outlay. CofiSOquOnL ly the gelding has proved a remunerative speculation to his new owner. Mr. Whelch is real fond of a lepper, and I should not be the least surpr sed to find h'm putting Multiply to the jumping business later on, for the Multifid gelding is just some horse at the fencing business. Centre had to be destroyed last week in consequence of having broken one of h’s legs while working. At the sale of the late Hon. J. D. Ormond’s bloodstock last month Centre was sold to Mr. Wilke, of Helensville, for 200 guineas, and was trained by S. Waddell at the time of the mishap.
