CANTERBURY.

Snub in Commission Again—Adjutant Galloping in Great Style—New Zealand Cup Nominations Due on the 21st inst. —Death of Tikitere —Marc Antony Causing Anxiety. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. During the past week most of the Riccarton trainers have been hurrying their charges along in view of engagements at the Ashburton and Geraldine meetings. A number of two-year-olds have also been given sprintmg tasks, and though as yet none of them stand out they are a decidedly promising lot. After having been on the easy list for some time Snub is in commission again, but he can hardly be at his best for the forthcoming meetings. All going well with him he can be looked on as an almost certain competitor in the next New Zealand Cup. Of all the, Cutts Brothers’ team, nothing is looking or going better than Adjutant. He is in nice condition for the time of year, and will probably race at Dunedin as a preliminary to the Cup meeting at Riccarton. His stable companion Gamecock is also galloping attractively and in a couple of tasks lately has shown to more advantage than Good Hope. The latter does not seem to have made the expected improvement during the winter months.

Bramble tve has not done much since the August meeting, but she could be got ready to do her best again at a short notice.

Disdainful continues to go on the right way and can be relied on to better any of her former efforts in the near future.

Don Francisco’s schooling tasks recently do not suggest that he is ever likely to turn out much use as a hurdler. He has been engaged in- several jumping and flat events at the Ashburton meeting, and the latter may claim his attention. Since his efforts at the Grand National meeting Crib has been having an easy time at the Washdyke. He claims no immediate engagements, but may be seen out in the hurdle events at the November meeting. The Canterbury Jockey Club has decided to defer taking entries for the New Zealand Cup meeting till the 21st inst., and weights will be declared a week later.

Tikitere, who some years ago put up several smart performances on the local tracks, died recently when foaling to Kilbroney. The same fate befel her foal.

F. D. Jones, who was called in the last ballot, failed to pass the medical examination as the result of defective hearing. The Kurow Jockey Club has received splendid support for its annual meeting, which this year will be held on the Oamaru course. Riccarton stables are well represented at the fixture.

Marc Antony continues to occasion his trainer, W. H. Thomson, a good deal of trouble. His unsoundness is of an intermittent nature, and may affect his Cup preparation.

Fiery Cross continues to go on the right way and will probably be raced at the Ashburton meeting.

R. Longley has just taken in hand a very promising filly by Martian from Edna May.
