ELLERSLIE ITEMS.

On Saturday the weather held up while the work proceeded. After breakfast, Royal Prince kicked off with a smartly run six furlongs alone. , . The two-year-old Tanzaret and Michael O’Leary sprinted smartly over a couple of furlongs twice, while Loyal Arch put in a useful circuit. Woody Glen and Meltino had heads together at the end of five furlongs. The Australian is a classy gentleman. Colonel Soult gave Tabasco a break from the seven furlong disc,* but failed to pick it up again, suffering defeat by a neck in fair time. The Colonel is very well. Hopfield alone covered half a mile nearly at top. Lady Glen put in a solid round alone. Independence and the Marble Arch- — Sweet Alice colt sprinted attractively down the straight. Mr. J. D. Lynch, the owner of the colt, was present. Mullingar, looking remarkably well, over the last four of seven fur lonsrs Informal and Fabriquette sprinted three furlongs. The flutter was in favour of the latter. . Lady Paula and a companion ran five furlongs easing up at the finish. Torotoro finished up a short sprint alone. , , Araluen got a break on her stable mate Sylviaroa and kept it easily at the end of half a mile in fair time The two-year-olds The Broke and uie Lady Hester filly sprinted separately, moving nicely. , . , , , Billy Wiggs had to be kicked along to keep with Brown Loch. Master Regel ran seven furlongs, but did not finish up to the task any too soundly. „ _ ~.. Tom Kemp’s big Penury — Lyddite mare is fining down nicely. She put in a couple of rounds in company with Joss, brushing home over the last two furlongs, showing fair pace. F Stenning’s two-year-olds sprinted in couples over short courses. Lough Ennell also ran along for a short spin. Fisher, Empire, Ulster, Pierrot, Pukuatea, Bellacity, The Celt, Meltchikoft, Eightning, Kauri King, Fionnuala, Bingham, Damoiselle, Patetonga, Soultane, Dood. Signo, Analogue, Sir Ralph, Copper Arran, White Sox, Malaya, Carmen Sylva, Sylvan Knight, Dancastor and others worked usefully, but no jumping took place. , , , , . j Rumour has it that the stable behind Sleepy Jack did not benefit much by that horse’s win at Marton. H. Goldfinch goes into camp on the 26th inst. J. Gunning has also been drawn in the ballot. Mr P. Maher, of the Thames, has a six-year-old mare by Bunyan from a Maoriland mare in work in care of his brother, Tom Maher. W. Windsor has a Bunyan gelding named John Bunny going into work at the Thames. He is a likely looking sort. There have been enquiries for Mr. J. D Kemp to put a price on First Call, but the Waiuku sportsman is not inclined to part with the gelding. The same owner has two fine colts by Advance from Electra and Voiee respectively that may be prepared for the back end of the season after being added to the list The Soult—Merry Maid ma~e Jolie Fille is expected to foal to Prince Merriwee, who is taking up stud duties again this season. Bert Oliver is back at headquarters and has charge of the two-year-old sister to Patetonga. The filly has been named Wish Win. It is needless to write that with the present weather all the work was done on the sand rink, and was nearly all of the medium pace order. J Chaafe rode Analogue himself and had’ Royal Prince as a companion over two useful circuits. Hopfield, looking nicely rounded up, was piloted by H. Stockley, at half-pace work. A. Robertson’s team, Bellacity, Pierrot, Meltchikoft and Co., look in splendid trim to put into fast work, and a few pipe-openers will put the team cherry ripe. W. Sharp is so far convalescent as to be allowed out on the verandah. In the meantime, Fionnuala, Glendalough, Pukuatea and the rest of his team, are making good progress. The Celt is rounding up into shape again under J. Anderton’s careful supervision, and should be carrying the colours well forward at the summer fixtures. The two juveniles under W. Tozer s care, the Robert the Bruce —Kakama colt and the Robert the Bruce —Mahinga filly, are making good progress, the former particularly so. W. McKinnon is back again in the saddle and put Golden Glow through a couple of sand circuits at a useful pace. Loyal Arch, Michael O’Leary, Mullingar, Gluetanus, Brown Loch, Woody Glen, Keystone, Sylvan Knight, Soultane, Coleraine, Dood, White Sox and Lightning all added their quota of interest to the morning’s toil. Tabasco and Bingham were stretched out over three-quarters of a mile without the full pressure being put on. Both are well forward. C. Brown topped the jockeys’ list with six mounts after breakfast. They were Pierrot, Bellacity, Sylviaroa, Malaya and two others. A. J. McFlinn, J. Conquest and Manson were kept busy. Sleepy Jack looks none the worse for his strenuous efforts at the Marton J.C. meeting. The rest of Lambess’ team, including Mentmore and Kauri King, are well. , . , Miss Negus and Master Regel look in first-class fettle to start the 191718 season. The last-named is nicely above himself. The stable companions Colonel Soult, Arran, Informal, The Broke, Meltino, Blue Cross, Fabriquette and the rest of Macmanemin’s team are in splendid health and condition for this time of the year. „ , r< . Pink Tie, Marconi, Dancastor, Scottish Knight, Copper, Wish Win, Ulster. Billy Wiggs, Patetonga, Pre-eminent and' Polydamon put in medium pace work. H. Barr had Te Onga and Kinwinning at the tracks doing easy pace work. The first-named looks a bit light after the Christchurch trip. The son of Regel and Onga is a bad traveller.
