STUD NEWS.

The imported thoroughbred stallion Clarenceux, a member of the number 4 family, and a winner of stakes in England to the value of over £3OOO including the Derby Cup worth £1323, is standing this season at Sandown, Waddington, Otago, at a fee of 16 guineas, and should be a fitting successor in the district to imported Sarto, judging from the description we have had of him and his breeding. His dam, Squint 11., is by Hagiscope from Scenery, by Beauclere from Queen of the Valley, by Exminster, and his sire, K'ng’s Messenger, son of King Monmouth, one of the best sons of King Lud, sire of King Cole, sire of Nelson, was

from Swiftsure, s'ster to Surefoot, by Wisdom from a mare by Gallopin from Miss Foote, by Orlando. Clarenceux should certainly command attention. Fuller particulars can be obtained from Mr. William Deans, Waddington. The settlers in the Waikato are again to have the services of that fine thoroughbred horse Potoa, who was one of the best racehorses of his day and the best son of the Hotchkiss horse Monoform, full brother to the highly successful racehorses and stud horses Multiform and Uniform, from the Sterlingworth mare Formo, whose dam Pulchra was one of the most prolific and successful of imported brood mares in New Zealand, the dam of numerous winners and producers of winners of a high-class character. Formo was also the dam of Formula, sister to Monoform and Formula is the dam of that good performer Form Up. Blackwatch, the dam of Potoa, has also been a successful brood mare, being dam of a number of winners of more than average merit and comes of a splendid family, the number 12 being, being by that good St. Albans horse Tasman, who won 33 races in New Zealand, including the New Zealand Cup ,from Abydos, dam of Strathnairn and other good winners. Full of number 12 blood, Potoa should be an especially good mate for mares possessing some of the same strains, held to be the best for doubling up or inbreeding. Some of his stock should be racing soon, and his fee, ten guineas, is not out of the way. Potoa will stand at Hinuera, his owner’s property.
