TROTTING

TROTTING FIXTURES. Feb. 23. 26 —Wanganui T.C. Feb. 24, 28—Otahuhu T.C. April 21, 25 —Auckland T.C. DATES OF LEADING EVENTS. May S—N.Z.5 —N.Z. Trotting Derby

WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB.

MEETINGS OPENS ON FRIDAY. The Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting will be opened on Friday next (February 23) at the local racecourse, and with" the presence in Wanganui of a large contingent of sportsmen from all parts of New Zealand the trotting fixture is certain to be widely patronised. Judging by the good acceptances received for the first day of the meetingsome splendid trotting should be served up for patrons on Friday next. The club has been very successful since its inception, and given fine weather the coming gathering should be the best yet held from every standpoint. Trotting has become very popular as a sport on the West Coast lately, thanks to the efforts of the Wanganui Club. The club recently purchased a very fine property handy to town for the purpose of making a five furlong track and having its own course and appointments. It is hoped that everything will be in readiness to hold next year’s meeting on the new course, and then the club will be in a much better position, as the track will be right up-to-date and the best class of trotters will be attracted. This will mean that the game will boom in the Wanganui district, and the clubs should have a most prosperous career.

There are some good performers engaged at the Wanganui trotting meeting this week, and most of the races should be contested by capital fields. The Cup race is likely to be a very fin? one, though the grass track to be used is not so even as it might be, and

this upsets calculations. Still, with Celtic Todd Bells., Stone Beldon, Shanghai and Albert Wallace amongst the probable starters, the race promises to be very interesting. The other events should also be well contested, and the sport provided during the two days will no doubt be of a high class. The acceptances for the first day are as follows: —
