WOODVILLE DISTRICT JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING.

HOUSEWIFE WINS THE CUP. The weather was of a threatening nature for the opening of the Woodville District Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Wednesday, but nevertheless the attendance was well up to the

average, of former years. The racing proved of an attractive character, the Woodville Cup in particular providing a stirring finish between the Auck-

land-owned mare Housewife and the Marlborough Cup winner, Tango, the former prevailing by a neck. Four hot favourites in Grey Guard, Lady Middleton, Thrace and Form Up were recorded winners in their respective engagements, so that backers were fairly correct in their calculations, isitors to the gathering enjoyed the outing thoroughly, the excellence of the arrangements for the comfort and convenience of patrons being the subject of much favourable comment. Mr. W. A. Lyon, the capable secretary, is deserving of no small meed of praise for the manner in which the meeting was conducted, and racing enthusiasts will always look forward to the club’s re-unions with pleasurable anticipations.

The totalisator investments amounted to £14,144, as against £13,031 for the opening day of the 1916 autumn gathering. The Grey Mogul was the only witndrawal from the Hack Handicap Hurdles, in which Grey Guard was a fairly warm proposition, with Sir Fisher, Hylaus and Jem only accorded moderate support. The favourite was ridden a judicious race by Copestake, who, though challenged by Paramahone in the run up the straight, succeeded in notching a head victory. Sir Fisher was third and Hylaus fourth.

Agnestes. Rawakore, Lady Kilwortu and Astrophel were the defections from the Maiden. Plate, leaving thirteen to go to the post. The Karamu representative, Bagdad, was elected a better favourite than Vermilion, the pair being the only ones to be accorded any degree of support. Matters proved most exciting at the barrier, for the Highden youngster, Achi Baba, bolted prior to the start, and colliding with a willow tree broke his neck, his rider, G. Clarke, fortunately escaping serious injury. Vermilion and Chimera held command in the early stages, but the latter faded out of the contest, and Vermilion finishing strongly won by a length from War Maid, who was three lengths in advance of Best Man. Thirteen was again the main for the Whariti Hack Handicap, War MAid and Westella being the only absentees. Carillon was made a fifty pounds better favourite than Lady Edith, with Multaine also well backed. The last-named topped out smartly, with Lady Edith in close attendance, but the latter could make no impression on the Gisborne-owned filly, who defeated her comfortably by nearly two lengths. Woodlark was third, and the favourite fourth.

Ladify was the only candidate to be withdrawn from the Cup, in which Beltane was favourite, with Red Ribbon, Bronk Delaval and Housewife the best supported of the other seven runners. Beltane was prominent in the early stages, with Housewife and Tango always handy, but the former gave place to the latter pair when the real test began, while Red Ribbon also took a hand in the finish. A great race saw Carmont get Housewife home a head in advance of Tango, with Red Ribbon a couple of lengths away, third, and the favourite fourth.

A dozen went to the post for the County Hack Handicap, Humorist, May Morn and St. Bees being withdrawn. Mahzoltov was made a pronounced favourite, with Parisian Diamond and Rockfield most fancied of the others. The race proved an interesting one, though once heads were in line for home Parisian Diamond displayed brilliant galloping ability, winning by a length and ahalf from Foeman, who just managed to defeat Splendidus for second honours. Mahzoltov vas fourth.

Lady Middleton, who raced with considerable success at the Westland meetings, was installed a hot favourite for the President’s Handicap, carrying over double the money invested on the second choice, Master Moutoa, while Goldstream w'as the only other of the nine starters to receive even moderate support. O’Shea had to do his best to get the favourite home by half a length from Gold-

stream, who with 01 dir ary luck would have reversed the decision, the Porirua candidate having a bad passage. An outsider in Namur was third, and Jean Laddo fourth. Seven started in the, Victor a Hack Hand.cap, the Aucklander, Thrace, being an odds-on favourite, while The Baronet and Lord Laddo were the only others whose chances were given serious econsic eration. The favourite got away badiy dnd was tailing the field over the first four furlongs, his chances of success appearing almost hopeless. The Baronet was out in front forcing the pace, but in the straight Lord Laddo and Faring Line joined in the struggle, and the son of Laddo’s victory was proclaimed. However, Carmont brought Thrace along with a phenomenal run and scored a victory from Lord Laddo by a neck, with Firing Line third.

Rockfield and Interlude were withdrawn from the Telephone Handicap, in which the consistent Form Up was backed down to odds-on, Sheila and Tyson being the only others to claim any degree of support. Tyson began with his usual smartness, and piloted the field into the straight, where Ferm Up put in his claim and won fairly comfortably from Sheila by a length, with Princess Moutoa third. The results were: —
