TURF RESULTS.

POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING. OPENING DAY. CLEFT WINS TURANGA STAKES. The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer meeting was opened at the Makaraka racecourse under ideal conditions, the weather being all that could be desired, while a very large crowd assembled on the picturesque ground, which looked at its best, to witness the afternoon’s racing. The various events attracted good fields of high quality, and some /ery interesting finishes resulted. The public were fairly correct in their selections, and no long-priced candidates managed to score during the afternoon. Tne enterprising secretary, Mr. D. R. De Costa, controlled the meeting in a manner that evoked much favourable comment, his keen foresight and careful organisation being largely responsible lor the unqualified success of the fixture. That racegoers were well equipped with the sinews of war was evidenced by the brisk speculation recorded on the totalisator, no less than £17,106 being handled, as against £14,964 for the opening day of the 1916 summer gathering, an increase of £2142 on last year’s figures.

Seven weighed out for the opening event, the Welter Handicap. Tavistock be ng elected favourite, while Pearl Marie, on whom J. Buchanan had the mount, was most in demand of the others. Lady Alicia also was accorded good support. Manson got the favourite away well, but he soon lost his position, and it was evident a long wav from home that he had no prospect of success. Golden Glade led the field along the back stretch, with Pearl Marie as his closest attendant, but the latter broke a blood-vessel before entering the straight and was pulled up. Golden Glade maintained his lead to the judge’s box, winning by half a length from Blackall, who was responsible for a brilliant sprint at the finish. Lady Alicia was a couple of lengths away, third. Despite his burden of 11.11, Black Heart was sent out a strong favourite for the First Handicap Hurdles, The Summit and Brunswick being the most fancied of the other five starters. Brunswick led past the stand the first time, with The Summit, Bodenham and Black Heart racing next in the order named. Brunswick still had charge of affairs as the straight was entered, but The Summit gradually drew on terms with him in the run to the post, while Bodenham moved up to take a hand in the finish. An exciting set-to resulted in Deerey getting The Summit home by a length from Bodenham, with Brunswick a couple of lengths away, third. Backers would hear of nothing but Carlysian for the Telephone Handicap, and the son of Elysian was made a much better favourite than Carlatour and Watchful, the prospects of the other four contestants not being seriously considered. The favourite fared well at the start, and soon had established a couple of lengths lead from his opponents, and he had no difficulty in scoring a length victory from Raumanuwhiri, with Watchful nearly two lengths away, third. The good field of nine were saddled up for the Turanga Stakes Handicap, the Gisborne Cup winner, Multifual, being installed favourite, Cleft, Ladogeur, Teka, and Dribble all having their respective admirers. The horses got away well, Cleft immediately taking up the running, showing the way to Toki, Mistic, Dribble and the favourite going past the stand the first time. Cleft continued to act as pacemaker going along the back of the course, and still had an advantage as the straight was reached, Multifual and Dribble both being handy. The latter pair, however, were unable to make any impression on Mr. Lysnar’s candidate, who ran in a pomfortable winner by two lengths, Multifual defeating Dribble by half a length for second honours. Mysteriarch was fourth.

Karema was the prime selection of backers when betting was in full swing on the Maiden Scurry, Kohinahina and Tornea being the most fancied of the other nine starters. Metallum shot out when the barrier lifted, and showed the way into the straight, where Karema and Tornea both threw out determined challenges. Stowe stuck to his task gamely on Metallum and with creditable skill managed to get the All Black gelding home a half-length in advance of Tornea, who

worried the favour.te out of second place by a head. The finish was a most exciting one, and was a tribute to Mr. Morse’s adjustments.

Mr. F. J. Lysnar supplied the favourite in Spectual for the County Stakes Handicap, while both Lord Ainslie and Woodrow claimed a large number of supporters. Backers of the favourite were doomed to disappointment, as Lord Ainslie, getting away smartly, never left the issue in doubt, winning by a couple of lengths from Spectual, with Lady Gazeley a similar distance away, third.

Flash Lady, Crosswords, and Colonnade were withdrawn from the First Hack Welter, leaving a quintette to go to the post. Favouritism rested with Hexton, while the Hymettus gelding Hylami received solid backing.

The latter was badly placed in the early stages, but showed a lot of pace along the back stretch, and was in the lead just after negotiating the bend into the straight. He had to be kept hard at it, however, to notch a length victory from Grand Idea, who was a couple of lengths in advance of Hythread. The concluding event saw Gazique sent out a warm favourite for the Flying Handicap, in which there were only five starters. Downham and Watchful both carried heavy investments, the race being a good betting one despite the small field. Watchful was the smartest to begin, with Colonnade and the favourite best placed of the others, but the firstnamed kept his opponents at bay in the straight, and won by a couple of lengths from Colonnade, with Zeus a similar distance away, third.
