TURF RESULTS.

TE KUITI RACING CLUIt

ANNUAL MEETING.

MUNSTER WINS CUP.

Although the weather was showery on Saturday for the Te Kuiti Jockey Club’s annual gathering, the rain was not of sufficient volujne to affect the pleasure of the large crowd which assembled on the club’s course, , the number including a great many visitors from Auckland. The fields Were of a satisfactory character, and some excellent racing was witnessed, the Farmers’ Plate in particular, in which gentlemen riders were in the saddle, providing a stirring finish. The Te Kuiti Cup attracted half a' dozen but proved rather a disappointment, none of the competitors having a chance with the nicely weighted Munster, who won in hollow fashion from the littlefancied Fionnuala, with the outsider of the field, St. Francis, third. The management of the gathering Was of a praiseworthy standard, the capable secretary, Mr. J.' H. -Trinnear, doing all in his power to add to the comfort and convenience of patrons. The totalisator staff was kept busy, the sum of £15,878 10s. being handled, as against £13,662 for the 1916 gathering, an increase of £2216 10s. The field for the Maiden Plate was reduced to half a dozen runners, Porphyry carrying nearly half the investments on the totalisator, while Opposition claimed fair support. The latter showed the way in the early stages, but racing to the straight entrance St. Carl shot to the front and had a good lead once the bend was negotiated. However, Deeley was nursing the favourite, and he soon had the measure of St. Carl, winning comfortably by four lengths. Opposition was two lengths away third. In consequence of her double victory at Taumarunui the previous week, the

Waikato-owned and trained Ally, Mill o' Gowrie, was made a good favourite for the Otorohanga Hack Handicap, in which 11 went to the post. Pink Tie and Last Call were the only others to be accorded’ any material support. The favourite was quickly in the lead, but with half the distance covered Pink Tie drew on terms, while Last Call also threw out a strong challenge, the trio having the finish to themselves. It looked as though Neck Tie would wear the daughter of Glengowrie down in the run to the post, but. staying on much better than she did at Takapuna, Mill o’ Gowrie scored a head victory from Pink Tie, with Last Call a similar distance away third. Rebel (who promised to start favourite) and Salvia were with drawn from the Te Kuiti Cup, leaving half a dozen to face the starter. The public had no hesitation in electing the Thames Cup winner, Munster, favourite, while Tinoreka, Te Papapa and Torotoro were all evenly backed. Tinoreka made the pace in the early stages, closely followed by Torotoro and Te Papapa, the favourite bringing up the rear. The last-named quickly improved his position, and entering the back stretch had raced up into second position, Torotoro still being third in the running. Munster raced up to the leader before the home bend was reached, and once Deeley straightened him up for the run to the post the son of Spalpeen responded in his best style, putting victory beyond doubt by romping in an easy winner by four lengths from Fionnuala, who was two lengths in advance of the fast-finishing St. Francis. The last horse to finish was Torotoro, who failed badly in his initial effort over a long journey. Te Papapa greatly disappointed her supporters, and appears to have lost all form.

Kaiwhakahaere and Glendalough monopolised the betting on the Hack Handicap Hurdles, in which there were seven starters. Gluterrino went out to make the pace, but came down at the second fence, and Tennessee then had charge from Cokely. Going along the back stretch Glendalough moved up to Tennessee, while Kaiwhakahaere, who had been racing last, also moved up. Glendalough, finishing strongly, easily disposed of Tennessee by four lengths, while Kaiwhakahaere was a poor third. Pink Tie, Corregidor, Keystone and Klriwinning was the order of favouritism among the best backed candidates In the Te Kumi Hack Handicap, in which 12 horses fulfilled their engagements. The last-named was quickest

away when the barrier was released, with Pink Tie in close attendance, but in the run to the straight entrance the , latter took charge, and, holding her own ■ nicely, won by a couple of lengths from the little-fancied Sleepy Jack, who was a similar distance in advance of Bally - gowan. Of the 13 carded for the Stewards’ Handicap Tinoreka, Torotoro, Kitty Bellairs, Gaycium, Fionnuala, Gold Necklet and Coleraine were withdrawn. The consistent Lady Glen was installed a solid favourite, with Lightning and Soultane fairly well supported. Lightning shot to the front when the barrier lifted, with Lady Glen and General Joffre as her nearest attendants. R. : Reed kept the daughter of Bezonian going, and though Glenspire made a great effort to head her in the run to the post she hung on to her task and gained a narrow victory by a long neck. The unlucky Soultane was two lengths away third. The Farmers’ Plate, for gentlemen riders, was voted a good thing for Paddington Green, on, whom Dr, Ring had the mount. Sea De’il being the only other of the nine starters to be accorded anything like support. The start was a splendid one, the amateur riders getting their mounts away in a manner that would do credit to the more practised professionals. The favourite was in a handy position, and was out in front as the field rounded the bend for home. J. Cockerton brought Sea De’il along with a great display of pace, while True Gun joined issue in the effort to bring about the favourite’s defeat. The finish proved highly exciting, the trio flashing past the post almost locked together, the judge (Mr. Fred. Vercoe) declaring in favour of Sea De’il by a head, with True Gun second, a head in advance of Paddington Green. Kitty Bellairs was better fancied than Mill o’ Gowrie for the Farewell Handicap, in which half a dozen contestants lined up at the post. Both Gayeium and Gold Necklet were well supported, the race being a good betting one. despite the small field. Mill o’ Gowrie began with her customary brilliancy and maintained her lead up to the finish, scoring rather comfortably

by a length from Gaycium, who was ,a length in advance of the favourite. The results were:— MAIDEN PLATE of 75sovs. Seven furlongs. 1— S.
