THE TOURIST and TRAVELLER

CH RISTM ASTIDE PHILANTHROPYCOMFORTS FOR THE BELGIANS. MR. JAMES ROLLESTON S APPEAL. Once more the New Year celebrations which were a feature of <-h Grand Hotel, Auckland, for many seasons oast gave way, at the suggestion S Mr J Rolleston, to the more pressing claims of philanthropy, the guests falling in readily with the Proprietor s anneal for funds for the needy Bel--Fans So enthusiastic was the response that the substantial sum of tP1254 Ils. was collected, on tne derstanding that the money^ was g.ven by way of extra ass.stance to a worthy cause and that it would be tieateu as supplementary to the "sualjnont - ly quota sent through the Govern ment by the Belgian Association. Efforts were made to secure the Government subsidy of £ for £. but unfortunately the Government cannot see its way to give the grant for co tributions outside the quota, and has replied to that effect. However, the amount is a handsome one as it stands, and 't will be cabled Home at once, a noteworthy testimony to the humanitartan energies of Mr. Rolles on and his guests. The suggestion was spiritedly followed up, and £4OO was immediately subscribed in the room, and later forwarded to General Godley, Ca ? ro for the benefit of our boys, the communication being gratefully acknowledged.
