ANNIVERSARY DAY.

LADY PENURY WINS TAKAPUNA J.C. HANDICAP. The meeting was concluded on Saturday in windy but otherwise favourable weather, and there was a record crowd. The totalisator business ran to hitherto unreached proportions on the same course, no less a sum than £41,296 being passed through the windows during the afternoon, as against £28,456 on the corresponding

day of 1916, the total for the two days reaching £75,204 10s., as against £b2,475, an increase of £12828.

The fields averaged larger than on the first day, and omy one actual favourite won during the day, or during the meeting. The management, w th the exception of the long drawing out of the day’s racing, was satisfactory, but really there are good grounds for protesting against the holding of eight races per day under existing conditions. It was 6.37 p.m. when the last race was run, and later, of course, before dividends were paid out.

Erroneous, who is leased to her present owner, who races under the assumed name of Mr. Finland, was coupled on the totalisator _n the Moana Handicap with Thrace, owned by Mr. E. W. Alison, jun., and the combination started favourites, Chilblain being second in request, with Keystone next, while another combination, Plenipotent and Last Call, was well backed. The last-named and Bowler (who carried 41b. overwe : ght) ran a dead-heat, Porphyry, a rank outsider, being third, after a good race home, though Bowler was out in front forcing the pace and was only caught in the last pinch. The topweight, Erroneous, had a 51b. allowance claimed for her, young Cotton riding, and the daughter of Finland got up handy to the placed trio. Plenipotent also had a 51b. allowance for his rider/ Mc-

Curdy. St. Carl, Whitehall and Royal Arch each had overweight, and so did the unruly Uncle Ned, who carried 141 b. above his handicap impost.

Yankee Doodle, who is still an uncertain customer at the post, was made favourite for the Takapuna Handicap Maiden Hurdles, but lost a lot of ground at the start and spoilt his chance. Luperino, who won on the first day, was equal to the task set him, and just won after a good race home with the faster-finishing Kaiwhakahaere, Glendalough again running into a place. Nukutawhiti, who was third favourite, failed to show up, and one is forced to the conclusion that he was not a good enough one to take on a Commonwealth campaign with.

The Suburban Handicap was picked as likely to furnish a match between the Stepniak mare Tinoreka and Ring Lupin, but. the last-named was beaten out of a place, Tinoreka winning by a neck from Lady Glen, with Lightning half a length off.

The Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap found King Lupin still in the position of first favourite, despite the fact that Bedford was voted very favourably handicapped. The son of Bunyan was not quite sufficiently seasoned for the longer task, as indicated by the running, and possibly suffered from interference, as did Tabasco, in each case the evidence of the riders at an enquiry going to show that it was unavoidable, though Royal Irish, ridden by R. Reed, was thought to have galloped on Bedford. A fine race home resulted in favour of Lady Penury by half a length from the

favourite, with the consistent Tabasco the same distance away. •Fourteen two-year-olds were lined up for the Hobson Handicap, Empire causing a good deal of delay, and several times unseating his rider. Eventually Agnestes, who was favourite, coupled with Sanacre, broke away once, and was first to move when the barrier was raised, but running out she caused the field to box, and then Empire, who was on the move, shot past and took command and stayed long enough to win by a neck, Bingham, who got none too good a run, finishing in second place. Penthesilea, who has frequently shown lots of pace, was fourth. Overweights carried were: Lady Bruce 21b., Shower Gold lib., Backfire 111 b., Tullivin 71b., Royal Prince 71b., and Danseuse 81b., due, of course, to the scarcity of riders, the six that carried over their handicap allotments being handicapped at 7.0. The weights should have been started higher. Empire's win would be acceptable to his owners, who paid a good price for him and got their first substantial return.

Gaycium was well supported for the Rangitoto Hack Handicap in a field of nineteen, but Rockfield, who was produced for the first time at the meeting, got home by a head from Fabriquette, the second favourite, Monodon, an outsider, being third, a length and a-half away, with Mill o’ Gowrie, who led part of the way, fourth. Rockfield paid a false price remembering his form on the same track, but the stable had not had any luck through the meeting, and a win was due.

Tararu Jack was favourite for the Waiwera Handicap Hurdles. Fisher, who was second in demand, would not have been so supported had it been known how sore he was. The hard going was against the horses generally, but Te Onga and Gluepot stood it out best. Fisher, after going once round, pulled up very sore. Te Onga’s win was due.

Housewife’s friends were numerous for the Anniversary Welter, Pendoon and Waiuta being also well supported, while Munster and Carbiness were backed with spirit. It was indeed a heavy betting race, next to the Jockey Club Handicap the best the club has ever experienced. People were unmindful of Tact having won the same race last year with 161 b. more weight, and neglected her, so that she again paid a good dividend, Waiuta and Munster being second and third, close up.
