TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB

SUMMER MEETING.

MERRY ROE WINS CUP. The summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club commenced on Saturday, and was witnessed by one of the largest attendances seen at the old and favourite racing resort. The weather was just right, a good healthy breeze tempering the sun’s rays. The course afforded goc-d going, and the fields were quite up to the standard of previous years and the racing was entertaining. The class of horses competing included some more than ordinarily useful when seen at their best, and the majority have been seen on the metropolitan course at Ellerslie. The racing was free from accidents, and though there were several enquiries into bumping or interference on the part of some of the horses and their riders, only one case called for more than kindly advice, the apprentice Rowe being suspended for one month for cutting across tactics in the Calliope Handicap and interference w.th Agnestes and others in that race.

The ball was set rolling with the Trial Handicap, in which a field of thirteen took part, Keystone, Chilblain and the imported Australian-bred Ihrace carrying most money. The two first-named a< ted up to expectations, but Silver Lupin, the topweight, lias now got to his best, and he cari ed his top weight home in front of both, who were close together at the f nish. Some thought Porphyry had Ict fourth, but Lady Energy was awarded the barren honour. Plenipotent was good enough to lead for three-parts of the journey. Waiuta, whose consistency has been very pronounced on courses wherever she has raced, carried considerably more than three times as much as Fabriquette, the next hest supported, who went to the front and was only passed by the three placed horses, Loyal Arch, Lady Glen and Soultane, in the last quarter. Loyal Arch finished well, and gave her owner his first win with her for nearly two years.

Merry Dan was the favourite for the Hauraki Handicap Hurdle Race, but Gluterino made things too merry for a mile for most of them, and when he retired Luperino came away and won in good style by a liberal three lengths from The Celt, who came from nearly last place over the last quarter and secured second place, Glendalough getting third, close up. Te Papapa was withdrawn from the Takapuna Cup, King Lupin, as was very generally expected, being made first favourite, practically an odds-on chance., the pool leaching to £5775. Merry Roe was second in demand, and then came Housewife. The last-named soon took charge and kept the field busy until a circuit had been run, at which stage Tabasco, who came next the rails, took a hand and led down the back and to the straight, where Merry Roe put in her claim and headed Tabasco, who came again and was only beaten a neck in 2min. 28 l-ssec., record time. Royal Irish, who had been beating Lady Penury in their gallops at Ellerslie, beat the favourite for third place. Merry Roe’s win made the third successive one for J. O’Shea, whose next mount, Bowler, was installed favourite for the Ferry Handicap, with Last Call and Bellacity next, Homeric (coupled with Celestial) carrying a fair amount. Homeric led at a rattling pace, but the distance, only five and a-half furlongs, proved a furlong too far, for though the son of Achilles and Paptua ran second and had been given every chance by the hand capper, there was another Achilles in the field, and the filly, Bellacity, ridden by J. Conquest, who has so often been up on Mr. L. Harris’ horses, nicely administered a beating to her disappointing relative. Last Call and Monodon coming next.

A rather better favourite was made of Bingham than Agnestes in the Calliope Handicap, Demotic being the third fancy. The locally-trained filly got out well enough and led, but met with some interference on the part of Backfire. Empire then got to the front, but was caught coming home by Demotic, who lost nothing through Deeley having the mount. Bingham, finishing well, was only beaten a neck for second place by Empire, who paid the best dividend of the day. Tenacious carried more money than Gluepot in the Orewa Hurdles, Marconi being third and Te Onga fourth fancies. Gluepot led and he and Te Onga had the greater part of the journey to themselves, and the firstnamed, after a strenuous set-to, just

squeezed home from Te Onga, with Tenacious in third place some lengths away. The Stewards’ Handicap saw Rng Lupin, Kitty Bellairs, Beeford and Tinoreka go out best backed, and the race may be shortly described. Ring Lupin and Tinoreka went out together and made the pace for all they were worth. Bedford came at Ring Lupin a furlong and a-half from home, and a little further on, when in the straight, took Tinoreka’s measure and finally won by two lengths in the exceptionally good t me of Imin. 8 l-ssec. for the course. Ring Lupin was nearly the same distance away, third, Gaycium and Tact next. Throughout the day Mr. Wynyard, secretary, had the business of the meeting well in hand, and the committee looked after their visitors nicely, though there were fewer than usual in evidence in the stewards’ stand.
