PALMERSTON NORTH SHOW.
The thirty-first of these famous shows is now fixed for the Ist, 2nd and 3rd November, as will be seen by our advertising columns. At the same time and place will be held the Manawatu Kennel Club’s annual dog show. The scope of this big exhibition is very comprehensive, and is calculated to amuse, interest and educate the thousands of visitors who attend it. The prize schedule, which is available, is replete with generous prizes, which will, . without doubt, attract large numbers of exhibitors and competitors. The horse leaping competitions, which are always an enormous attraction at Palmerston North, are said to be unexcelled in Australasia. This side of the Show, though of importance in the direction of improving army remounts and hunters, is not the main object of the Show by any means. The draught horses, cattle, sheep and pigs command attention, providing in the case of the cattle and sheep a very large part of our rapidly growing export
trade. Therefore, T stands to reason that everything possible should ba done to maintain and improve on the best quality of the stock. To the A. and P. shows the countiy is greatly indebted for the work done in this direction. The exhibits of cattle, sheep and pigs are not greatly spectacular, but the competitions amongst breeders are exceedingly valuable for the reasons stated. The exhibits in the pure-bred dairy divisions of late years at Palmerston North have been magnificent, and with the erection of the new cattle pavilion last year, they should greatly increase. We have not space to review the schedule at length, but our readers should note that the book can be obtained post free on application to the secretary, Mr. W. T. Penny, Box 85, Palmerston North.
