Professor David, the learned geologist, of Sydney University, who was the scientific officer with the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition, and led the party wh’ch reached the South Magnetic Pole, is now at the front in the Australian Miners’ Corps (says London “Opinion”). Professor David, who is close on sixty years of age., is acting as geologist to the corps, which is recruited entirely from expert miners from every state in the Commonwealth.

A cablegram respect’ng permits to Australian visitors was received from Sydney, by the Union Steam Ship Company, stat : ng that Australian visitors to New Zealand, holding ma’l steamer return tickets, will be permitted, during the currency of the t’ckets, to return by a mail steamer on securing an additional permit from the New Zealand Government.

Mr A. W. Gorden, the first New Zealander to get a fly’ng certificate from Messrs Walsh Brothers’ Aviation School in Auckland, is leaving shortly for England, where he will jo’n the Royal Flying Corps, and receive his final training before be’ng sent on to the front.

Mr Z. Kamiya, manager of the Osaka Mercantile Steamship Company and spec al commissioner to the South Seas and Australia, speaking to members of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, said that the purpose of his present journey to Australasia was to look out fcr an opening for a new line of steamers. He found the chance of such a service very favourable to his

company, which meant a great investment of money on the part of his shareholders. He would report to his directors that they must at this opportune time come into the front of new trade. He would impress on his directors to inaugurate this new line of service. He had great faith in the future trade between New Zealand and Japan. H's company had 130 vessels, and had some dozen steamers in construction.

General Sir Alfred Robin who arrived in Auckland on Tuesday intends to confer with the members of the local Recruiting Committee regarding recruiting matters.

Mr. L. C. R. Averill, a son of Dr. A. W. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, enlisted last week. Mr. Averill is a student, and is 19 years of age.
