CANTERBURY.

Kilmeny’s Jumping Prospects—The Chokebore Yearlings — Some of the Yaldhurst Youngsters—R. J. Mason’s Team of Juveniles—Adjutant Making Satisfactory Recovery —Latest Additions to Ranks of Hurdlers. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The only work of any interest performed at Riccarton during the past week has been done by the jumping brigade. Kilmeny, who claims an engagement in the steeplechase events at the Dunedin meeting, was given his first lesson over the big obstacles. For a novice his display was most promising, for though the pace was slow he jumped very cleanly. Should he go on all right Kilmeny will contest the big cross-country ivents at the Grand National meeting.

A newcomer at Riccarton is All War, a half-brother to El Gallo. He has been given a couple of turns over the hurdles, and shapes well for a green one.

Glenongley, who has been racing on the West Coast, has joined R. Longley’s team at Riccarton. He and Caraid Dileas, who will be racing at Marlborough this week, will be taken to the North Otago and Dunedin meetings.

Nine of Sir Geo. Clifford’s yearlings are now located at Chokebore Lodge. Amongst the latest comers are a bay colt, Onlooker, by Cannie Chiel —Mad W’hirl; a bay colt, Periscope, by San Francisco —Telescope; a brown filly, Blockade, by Treadmill —Fairhaven; and a brown filly, Jeopardy, by Treadmill —Flitaway. The yearling colt by Flavus from Lady content, acquired by Mr. A. W. Rutherford at the Sydney sales, is now being handled by A. McAulay. The same mentor is also putting a filly by Boniform —Grand Rain through the rudiments of her education.

At Yaldhurst R. O’Donnell is at work on a batch of Mr. G. L. Stead’s yearlings. They comprise a colt by Boniform —Pedometer, a filly by Rokeby—Miss Dalrymple, a filly by Boniform —Ormolu, and a colt by Rokeby —Rose Red.

R. J. Mason’s team of juveniles is

a particularly promising one. It includes the Australian-bred colt by Comedy King—Air Motor, purchased in Melbourne; a filly by Martian — Lovelorn, a colt by Martian —Forked Lightning, a colt by Martian—Everlasting, and a 'filly by Demosthenes — Mistime. Mason also expects another consignment from Mr. Greenwood’s establishment shortly, most of which are by Danube. Adjutant, who went amiss after the first day of the Easter meeting, is making a satisfactory recovery, but will not sport silk again till next spring.

A recent addition to the ranks of hurdlers at Riccarton is Encore. The son of Maniapoto is anything but sound, and does not look like standing a hard preparation. Hap Dha is another who has been schooled over the pony hurdles with satisfactory results.

It is not often that Riccaiton trainers patronise the Otaki Maori meeting, but if weights suit there is a probability of Emperador, Greenstreet, Daytime, Samiesen, All War and Tannhauser sporting silk at the coming fixture.

The Wanganui handicapper evidently has a rather exalted opinion of the Riccarton contingent that were nominated for the forthcoming meeting. Daylight Bill has more than he is entitled to in the big cross-country event, and is not at all favourably placed through Jackman, El Gallo and Glenmore. In the Century Hurdles Art will be meeting a good field for ; he first time, and it comes as a sur prise to find him called on to concede weight to such as Hurakia and be within a few pounds of El Gallo and Harbour Light.
