TROTTING

WAIKATO TROTTING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. TODD BELLS WINS CUP. The annual meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club was held on Saturday in fine weather. There was a large attendance and splendid fields all through, and some good trotting and pacing on the Claudelands track, which, for a grass track, -was in fast condition. The starting of Mr. F. Edwards, who was also handicapper, was very good considering the dimensions of the fields. The sum of £7342 was passed through the totalisator, as against £3670 last year. F. Martin met with an accident through Norin intson falling with him while doing a preliminary, the result of colliding with another horse. A spectator who attempted to run over the track when the horses were contesting one of the events was knocked down and rendered unconscious lor a time. Mr. A. G. Mabee acted as stipendiary steward, that official having been recently appointed by ihe N.Z. Trotting Association. Amberite had an easy win in the Introductory Handicap, for which he was favourite. Master Park put up a meritorious performance by getting through a big field in the Stewards’ Handicap (one mile) and winning in 2min. 13sec. on the grass track. It was a great race, as he only beat the favourite, Allwcod Fashion, by a neck, and St. Ursula was only a short neck away, third. Strategy easily won the Ladies’ Bracelet from Bronze Patch, Witch Hazel and the rest of the field. Todd Bells similarly treated the field in the Waikato Trotting Cup, for which St. Leo was favourite, the pair, however, being split by Rexcordium, who later in the day won the Farewell Handicap, for which he started favourite, beating Allwood Fashion and a big outsider in George K. and thirteen others. Lady Wilmington, who has long been due for a win, overtook Sv eet Prince, who showed plenty of pace but failed to finish strongly, at the end of the Railway Handicap, and Avon by a length. The Claudelands Handicap, ever the same distince —one mile and a half —was won by Bronze Patch, who earlier in the day was second in the Ladies’ Bracelet. Treanic was second, and nothing else had a chance with them. Proud Moor accounted for the Hamilton Handicap in good style from Grattan Abbey after a good race. Eruption started in this event, but in the big race stopped at the post. He ran in the nomination of his new owner, Mr. Borland, and was driven by J. W. Johnstone. The secretary (Mr. A. J. Smith) and his assistants got through their duties well, and the success of the meeting should help for

future meetings of the club. Results: — INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP of 45 sovs; second ssovs. One mile and a-half. I—Jos.1 —Jos.
