ELLERSLIE ITEMS.

On Saturday the welcome break in the weather delayed the work till after breakfast, only one horse, Silver Morn, putting in an appearance at the before breakfast session.

All the fast work was accomplished on the sand. King’s Courier ran out six furlongs alone in Imin 19sec. Goldsize alone swung round the track, not looking to make time, in 2min 2sec.

Glissando and Te Papapa scampered over five furlongs in lmin 7sec, finishing on terms. Cultriform and Vinaka ran five furlongs over the same ground in lmin 6 3-ssec, finishing as above. Colonel Soult and Loloma skipped over seven furlongs on the tan. The gelding easily held the mare in lmin 37 3-ssec. Harlestone was pulling over Gold Necklet from the seven furlong disc in lmin 34sec.

Soultikoff and Tragedy King tlew two of the small battens twice. This pair are fast making up for lost time. Mullingar appeared quite sound and not suffering from his old ailment when he pulled up after galloping five furlongs in lmin Bsec. Takanini and Pre-eminent, alter being well warmed up in the centre, tan five furlongs, all in favour of the former, who is very well. Tenacious had too much pace lor Hockey over a round of tlie big hurdles.

Captain Jack, Ambassador and Waimai flew’ three of the big hurdles, and then took the sod wall double and stone wall, lepeating the performance over the same jumps, taking 14 jumps —a good schooling bout. Tact had Lady Penury easily settled at the end of a soundly run six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the latter taking 2sec longer. MONDAY. C. Coleman has a fine looking two-year-old by Spalpeen from Battleship placed in his hands to prepare for the coming season. The juvenile is of the lengthy sort and close to the ground, and is own brother to the hurdle mare Vestal. Marconi, who has been resting with a cut stifle, has resumed slow work again under C. Coleman. F. J. Macmanemin has a collection of six two-year-olds which he js busy with. A colt by Demosthenes from Gold Treasure, a filly by Monoform — Hesperian, a filly by Monoform—Lira, a filly by Marble Arch—Latona. a filly by General Latour—Monoquil, and a filly by a Soult —Miss Lottie colt from Waterwood make up tlie bunch. All are very tractable and are worked on the two-year-old rink. Mr. R. Walker’s Spalpene gelding The Celt has resumed work again at headquarters. The chestnut looks well to the eye, and a win would not be out of order for the patient owner.

The purchaser of the gelding Hiero has not done much with the horse since taking him over. The- gelding pulled up a bit tender after working one morning after going into his new quarters.

Mr. S. Bradley’s Manukau has been at the tracks doing easy pacing work. McHugh has not had tlie son of Wairiki looking so robust for quite a long time.

The Onehunga-t rained gelding Goldfile is doing easy pace work again at headquarters. The son of Wairiki — Bonnie Doon is one of the light fleshed ones. , ,

Collins, who is located at Avondale, has Tamahere there. This upstanding horse is bv Coronet from Royalty. Alic Mitchell has Maui Nina in work at the same locality, w’hile G. Lindsay

has Uncle Ned and a colt by Royal Soult from Mary Ann that will be prepared for next season. The old-time trainer and horseman Harry Hickton felt “the call” and has gone back to the game at Avondale. He is at present knocking into shape a horse by Obligado, and is also breaking in one for Mr. Dawson, the owner of Cordite.

War Time, by Charlemagne II , a rising three-year-old, will be put into work shortly. By the time he faces the barrier again he w’ill have been off the tracks for 12 months.

Syd. Walker, the Te Aroha trainer, has a two-year-old coming to Ellerslie shortly to be put into work. He is by Finland from Trebelle.

During the week Tararu Jack was popped over the pony hurdles and left for Manawatu on Saturday. His trainer, A. Julian, left on Sunday night. Silver Morn has gone into W. Mobberley’s care, as also has a Master Soult—Gazette two-year-old. J. Negus, the trainer of Master Regel, has been giving the son of Regel—Onga a rest. The gelding put in light work on Monday. Negus has also the six-year-old gelding Nukutawhiti. by Lord Roseberry. He is a half brother to Rajah.

The rising three-year-old gelding All Talk, by All Black —Wordy Warfare, is coming on nicely. On Monday Nukutawhiti, which hails from the Northern Wairoa, was given a schooling lesson over the small battens, shaping very well for a novice C. Walker, the owner-trainer has been confined to his room, suffering from a severe fall. He was at headquarters on Monday with Sea De’il, the first time for a week. The gelding put in easy pace work. Mr. J. Thornton, the part owner of Master Regel, has been laid up for some months with rheumatism, and has been at Rotorua, taking advantage of the mineral baths for some time. All the work on moment, was on the course.

With the course proper open and a fine morning trainers took advantage of the chance to send their chaua»es along. Colonel Soult was the bright particular star of the early session by giving Hadj half a furlong start and a beat-

ing, running the six furlongs with the trestles well out in the good time of lmin ISsec—an extra sound gallop. Merry Roe. Self and Castalia ran home m the above order, taking 3sec longer.

Tact, with a feather weight in the saddle, beat Gold Lac, with tne worst of the poundage, in lmin 20 3-ssec. Goldsize alone put the chcuit past in 2min 6sec, finishing up solidly. Cultriform and Loloma sprinted down from the new five furlong post m the fair time of lmin ssec, the juvenile phasing the onlookers.

Try Fluke and Signo worked in company.

Lady Mabel and Worcester sprinted six furlongs, being on te. ms at the finish.

The Alba Rose gelding Sir Rosa sprinted a lew furlongs, finishing strongly.

Soultane, putting a lot of dash into his work, finished up an attractive sprinting bout.

Sir Ralph ran the last four of five furlongs alone in 53sec. This fine two-year-old gives promise of being a useful handicap horse, as he has both size and pace to recommend him, but is somewhat backward in his coat.

Marble Star made an exhibition of Lady Glen at the end of seven furlongs, running the first six in lmin 21 l-ssec‘, finishing up the distance in lmin 35 3-ssec.

Centenary, with Silk in the saddle, flew four of the little sticks. The big chestnut is in fine condition. Crispeen (Coleman) and Takanini (Preston) had the pace on in a spin over five of the schooling hurdles. The former outjumped his companion. Others that did useful work were Bluestone, Rome, Manukau, Pre-emin-ent, Sliprail, Blue Black and Goldfire. After the breakfast interval Dr. Beveridge’s chestnut gelding half brother to Nicomar, who is coming on nicely, spurted three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. Alf. Delaval sprinted a few furlongs at top.

Kitty Bellairs and another ran five furlongs from the new post in lmin 4 3-ssec, Kitty beating her companion by half a dozen lengths. Spalspire, by Spalpeen, and a companion, ian half a mile on the inner grass in 51 3-ssec, running home in this order.

King’s Courier alone ran seven furlongs in lmin 41sec. The erratic chestnut was tiring at the end of the journey.

Genevieve ran six furlongs on the inner grass in lmin 23 2-ssec. Independence and Kidderminster ran five furlongs from the new post in lmin 7 4-ssec, with the two-year-old in the van.

Sea De’il and Nildah ran a moderate six furlongs with heads together in lmin 25sec. Fionnuala and a mate took lmin 23 4-ssec to get to the end of six furlongs, the former in the lead.

Ritasea and General Joffre fluttered over five furlongs from the new post in the fair time of lmin ssec. The last-named finished the soundest.

Dancastor and Maisie Pop were together at the end of five furlongs over the same distance in lmin 6 l-ssec.

Spalfish and Brookfield circled the course in the fair time of 2min 7 2-5 sec. The latter well settled. Tenacious finished well at the end of a run over five of the big schooling hurdles, and is in favour with some of the course watchers. Fireaway, Taihape, Hawea and Dogger Bank went over the steeplechase fences in the centre, taking the sod wall double and stone wall. The former then pulled off and the others cantered round, going over the same fences and taking the water jump in place of the double, being together at the last fence.

Silver Lupin splinted three furlongs on the inner grass in 38sec.

Lady Penury and Peu'doon ran five furlongs in lmin 7 3-ssec. The mare could have improved the time. Prince Eddie put a circuit of the tan past in 2min 6 4-ssec. Blue Garment went over the little sticks, clouting one hard. Captain Jack, Waimai, Captain Lock and Ambassador started over th© hurdles, the latter coming down at tne first, but was remounted and followed the others over the two remaining fences, sod wall double and stone wall, then pulling off. The other three continued over the rest of the steeplechase fences. First Call jumped two of the small and large battens, fencing well. The owner was p: esent to see the horse Black Northern, who looks at his best, stuck his toes in while running along on the flat with a big chestnut and then changed his mind and rushed to the front, leaving his companion standing as if he was anchored. Nukutawhiti was schooled over the pony hurdles. The stable mate of Master Regel shapes well for a beginner.
