TAUMARUNUI PACING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING'.

HOUSEWIFE WINS THE CUP.

The Taumarunui Racing Club may be considered very fortunate. No club in the Dominion has ever commenced life under more favourable conditions. Everyone seemed desirous of rendering assistance to the club with its first totalisator meeting, and a particularly active canvas amongst horse owners resulted in one of the largest nominations being received. These were followed by good acceptances, some of which apparently were not made with the intention of completing the engagements. If they were, scratchings were abnormally heavy, an average of about eight per race being withdrawn. Notwithstanding this, plenty of material was still left and the fields averaged very well. As for speculation it was very keen; indeed, so much so that the large sum of £18,741 was put through by Messrs. Hayr and Co., who erected a large totalisator, the figures on which could be plainly seen by intending investors, of which there were more than usual, and probably a larger number of persons all told than have attended meetings of other clubs held on the same grounds. There were probably fewer ladies in the crowd, however, though the day was so beautifully fine, and one would expect to see them predominating in these days, when so many men are away at the war or in camp. There were a fair number present in khaki, some of them on holiday leave and others returned from having done their share of fighting—poor fellows, some of them, with something to show for it.

The racing was excellent, in five of the events very close finishes resulting, though first favourites and some second favourites and well-sup-ported candidates were successful during the afternoon. Mr. S. Sarah (secretary), assisted by Mr. Hayr, sen., and an official or two from Auckland, had the business of their department well in hand, and though the first race was over half an hour late and time was never quite recovered, the train arrangements were altered slightly to meet the convenience of the racegoers, who appreciated what was done for them. The train from Auckland was perhaps the heaviest that has ever pulled in at Claudelands. Fresh carriages were taken on at Ellerslie en route, and the arrival back at Auckland was only correspondingly late as compared with the time of departure from the course.

A solid favourite was made of Sir Rosa in the Maiden Handicap, in which there were fifteen starters, two of which did not get away at all well, while the second favourite, Brown Loch, was always at the head of affairs, and his superior seasoned condition and galloping ability enabled him to stay on better than the others, and he had an easy win indeed, Sir Rosa not getting a good run. Corrigidor and Gretchen, Saccharine and Rohe, were clear of Pre-eminent, Regio, Marble Rose, Sir Rosa and First Call. Quite a numter of the starters ran very green.

The Matapuna Handicap saw Coleraine go out a very decided first favourite, with Lightning next in demand. Master Florence led nearly all the way, and it was hard luck for his owner to see him beaten by such a narrow margin in the closing stage by Coleraine, who got up in rime to win by a neck, while Delenda was gaining fast at the same time and was almost on terms with Master Florence. Lightning, Glissando and Try Fluke were next, with Gaycium, who left the post badly, some lengths away.

The Taumarunui Cup saw Housewife supported more solidly than Monojack and Soldier, though it was a fair betting race. The start was a satisfactory one, but Housewife soon cleared out from the others and was followed by Signo, Soldier and Munster, who were together along the back, with Permit in the rear. The last-named, however, ran up to the ruck turning for home. Nothing, however, had any chance with the three-year-old, who led all the way and won by three lengths—which might have been more —from Signo, who was two lengths ahead of Soldier, Castalia, Permit, Munster and Monojack being next in order. Monojack apparently suffered from the effects of his race and seemed sore.

The Hurdles field was a very

mediocre one, and Ngatoa was supported down to odds-on. Eminent led at a great pace and may not have been caught had he not broken down a long way from home, before jumping the second to last fence, when Ngatoa was some lengths away and was being ridden. The North Shore representative won easily after that by half a dozen lengths. Pateonga, the topweight, a three-year-old by Marble Arch, was favourite for the Matiere Hack Handicap, and was leading and looking all over an easy winner coming down the straight, but was very sore and swerved coming home and nearly interfered with Glittering Sands, who was only defeated a neck, O Shea and Deeley, the respective riders, riding a good finish, the former with his horse in difficulties. Te Papapa was made favourite for the Taringamutu Handicap and ran a sterling race, finishing strongly, but too late to get up to Lightning, who caught Spalfish, who made nearly all the running, and won by over a length. A rise of 61b. did not prevent Coleraine from running another good race. This was in the Manunui Flying Handicap, but the good thing nearly came completely undone, as Try Fluke, who made a considerable improvement on his previous display, came from well bacK and got up in time to make a dead-heat of it, the distance being a furlong further. Gallupin was a fair third. Coleraine started best, with

Ring Lupin and Glissando next, but Ring Lupin went right back over the last furlong and a-half to last place. Thoolomi, the favourite, led all the way in the Otunui Welter Handicap. Pendoon was second fancy, but Achilledes was nearest the Australian in the last furlong and well on the way to the post, when Plenipotent came and took a hand and just missed paying nearly a third of a century dividend, Thoolomi winning by a longneck, Achilledes nearly a length away third.
