HAWKE’S BAY.

Morning’s Half-sister —Track WCrk at Napier Park—Ngatarawa to be Made an Up-to-date Training Establishment. (From our own Correspondent.) NAPIER, Monday. Edith Cure ton (Castor —Frailty) produced a filly to Demosthenes last week at Crissoge, the breeding establishment of Mr. G‘. P. Donnelly. Edith Cureton will visit Demosthenes again this season. Kirkby, who of late has been racing in the joint interests of Messrs. A. Sellars and P. P. Neagle, has been acquired by the latter, and when he next lines up for business will carry the racing uniform so many times made co'ispicuous by Sir Moseley, Theodore, Evadne and Diavolo. In addition to Hikahakeke, F. Lind is imparting knowledge to an aged son of Coeur-de-Lion and Hinewhata. The pair are both owned by Mr. G. C. Ormond, of Mahia, the eldest son of the Hon. J. D. Ormond. Another of F. Davis’ bargains in the daughter of King’s Guest and Kil-

worth is making good in her exercises on the trying-out trail at Greenmeadows. The word bargain is just the fit, for the filly only cost Davis 30 guineas at the last sale of Mr. G. P. Donnelly’s youngsters held in March, and judging by the excellent fashion in which she handles herself will prove a hard one to overthrow when her period arrives. Morning’s two-year-old half-sister by Tribulation has been christened Afternoon. Like her relative she is owned and was bred by Mr. F. Armstrong, of Akitio. Mr. J. W. White, the well-known Hastings owner, and who in the past was one of the gentleman riders’ brigade, has nearly recovered from the effects of the operation that he recently underwent for appendicitis. At Napier Park on Saturday morning Desert Gold and Marco Bello had a tussle over a half-mile dash. Both moved and finished well, the filly having slightly the best of the go. Balboa, Perceler and Suratura were slipped over a similar distance, Suratura being in front at the finish. J. Sceats has got his team, consisting of Tavistock, Suratura, and the

filly by Motiti out of Jewellery, doing well on the try-out at Napier Park. Master Malachi, who unluckily went amiss jusjj prior to the Pah.iatua gathering, is also under the care of Sceats, who has hopeful ideas that he will be again able to get him fit for battle. Mr. 11. M. Campbell, of Poukawa, has bestowed the. appellation of The Hun on the yearling full-brother to Hurakia. Multiply arrived at Hastings on Friday, and at present is domiciled at V. Collelo’s establishment at Hastings. His owner has purchased the Ngatarawa estate, a few miles out. of Hastings, and when the necessary arrangements have been completed Multiply, Chortle and others forming his and his brother’s team will be • installed in his new possession. Ngatarawa is splendidly situated for a training establishment, as the going is good and it is well sheltered, and a first-class training track is one of the adjuncts of the property. For quite a number of years Mr. G. P. Donnelly owned the station, and during his occupancy his team all received their education there. Later

on Mr. E. J. Watt purchased Ngatarawa, and he also had several of his horses put through their facings on the track attached to the place. Admiral Beatty has been returned to his owner, Mr. A. Sellars, who is now personally supervising the education of the son of Gold Reef. Mr. W. Murray, of Wanstead, is having his team, Conziska, St. Omer and The Nile, worked at present on his own property. The trio are well forward and doing excellently.
