METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB. OPENING DAY. CALM WINS AUGUST HANDICAP. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August meeting opened on Monday, August 8, in dull weather, but there was a very large attendance. His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Diverpool were present. The track was in capital order. The totalisator handled £26,126, as against £19,045 10s. for the corresponding day last year. AVON HANDICAP (Harness) of 200 sovs, for unhoppled trotters only (4.55 or better), two miles. —1 Glacian, 14 sec, 1; 2 Imperial Crown, 14sec, 2; 6 Clive, Ssec. 3. Ten started. Won by three lengths. Clive, who showed a lot of pace in the last half mile, but lost ground by breaking, was three lengths away third, and then came Truganini, Electrocute and Michael Galindo. Time, smin 17 2-ssec.

TELEGRAPH HANDICAP (Harness) of 160sovs, one mile.—l False Alarm, 2sec, 1; 4 Prince Poole, 2sec, 2; 8 Dot Robbins, 2sec, 3. Eleven started. Won comfortably by three lengths. PrincePoole was four lengths in front of Dot Robbins. Time, 2min 32 4-ssec.

DASH HANDICAP (Saddle) of 160 sovs, one mile. —Jack Ashore.. 2sec. 1; Hamapuka, 2sec, 2; Bright Alice, 4sec, 3. N-neteen started. Won by a length. Time, 2min 25sec.

CONCLUDING DAY. Fine weather prevailed for the concluding day of the gathering on Friday, and the attendance was again large. The totalisator investments amounted to £39,563 10s., as compared with £29,912 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £96,895 10s., as against last year’s total of £76,952. Turning towards the back stretch Tommy C. drew out from the others, and Jingle commenced a fast run, which took him into third place by the time they readied the far turn. Tommy C.. however, held his own easily, and won by six lengths Calm lasted long enough to beat Jingle by a neck for second place. Breeze was fourth, and then in order came Win Soon, St. Kevin, Denver Huon, and Persuader. Time, 4min 47 2-ssec.

A protest, which was entereu by the owner of Calm against Tommy C., on the ground of interference, was dismissed. The driver of Tommy C, was, however, fined £lO for careless driving.

CANTERBURY HANDICAP (Saddle) of 200sovs (4.50 or better), two miles. —5 Grainger, lOsec, 1; 4 Ariadne, 7sec, 2; 7 Vermont, 7sec, 3. Eighteen started. Won by two lengths. Time, 4m n 47 2-5 sec.
