DEMOSTHENES is a dark brown horse and greatly resembles his sire. He has a beautiful head, neck and shoulders, muscular loins and quarters, and is tlie embodiment of an ideal sire. During his turf career he won several races, including the Doncaster Spring Handicap and Stewards’ Handicap at Epsom, and i n each of his efforts displayed great pace and stamina, and is one of the best legged horses in the Dominion. DESMOND is the sire of Craignour and Aboyeur first and second in English Derby, the former being sold for 130,000 for stud purposes. He proved a brilliant two-year-old, winning five ol six events. LOMOND, sold for £lO,OOO, THE WHITE KNIGHT, winner of the Curragh Grand Prize, Ascot Gold Vase. Newbury Cup, March Stakes, Coronation Cup (twice), Ascot Gold Cup (twice) and Good wood Cup; SIR ARCHIBALD, winner of the New Stakes, Chesterfield Stakes, Duchess of York Plate, Victoria Cup, Salford Borough Handicap, Rous Memorial Stakes, STORNOWAY, Fulbourne Stakes, HAPSBURG, winner of New Stakes, etc., sold for 3200 guineas as a yearling; LAND LEAGUE, winner of 33 races. including the Cambridgeshire Handicap and Chesterfield Cup. and CHARLES' O’MALLEY are some of the good horses by Desmond. The lastnamed won four events consecutively at two years old, the Windsor Castle Stakes Ascot. Seaton Delaval Plate, Newcastle Richmond Stakes Goodwood, and Autumn Breeders’ Plate at Manchester. Earla Mor, Athi and Beau are amongst the successful sires got by Desmond. Desmond's stock between 1903 and up to tlie time of his death in 1913 had won 359 races worth £138,277, and he then headed the list of winning sires in England, and his two next seasons were at the time booked up at 250 guineas per made. To date his progeny have won about £lBO,OOO. CARLIN, dam of Demosthenes and Peter the Hermit, comes of a splendid line, which includes Miami (Oaks), Mary Stuart (Oaks and St. Leger), Merry Gal, Tlie Palmer, Rosicrucian, Gal tee More, Ard Patrick, Morion, Winkfield. Johnny Morgan, Sunstar, White Star, Marayax, Princess Dorrie (2000 Guineas, Oaks), and numerous other great winners in England, while in the colonies there are many branches of the same line that have sent forth numerous winners. In New Zealand such highly successful horses as Stepniak. Nelson, Capapie, Freedom, Tirailleur, Merry England, San Fran, Provocation, Menschikoff, Patron, Paritutu, Paisano. Expect, Mahaki, and Reputation come from the same tap root, and such great mares as Steppe, Rupee, Stepfeldt, Merganser, Spade Guinea, Apropos, She (dam of Bobadil).
