TROTTING.

CANTERBURY NOTES.

(By Telegraph — Cnristchurch Correspondent.) By a mistake on the part of the judge, Azile was placed third in the f arewell Hand.cap at the Ashburton meeting, a posh ion that the official sutsequent.y admitted belonged to Gee Whiz. . When betting started on the Win.er Handicap at Ashbur.on Sherwood’s name was massing from the list of horses on the total.sator, and several would-be supporters of the horse had them investments refused by the totalisator clerks. A few minutes prior to the machine closing Sherwood’s name was displayed as a starter, and a few ticke s were taken out cn h-S chance. As the horse was only bea.en by a head, and paid a good div.dcnd for second place, a lot of his would be supporcers cons.der they have a decided grievance against the club. . , „ Umako, winner of the Tr.al Handicap at Ashburton, has only recently gone into R. W. Frank’s stable. This colt was en.ered for the New Brighton Derby, but d d not survive the final payment. In his race he started off smarJy and had the result in safekeeping a long way from home. He is a full-brother to the speedy Huia Dillon, from Gratanette, both American importations. The Ashburton colt Emilius is gaming quite a reputation for fractiousness at the post, and in his last two efforts has failed to give his many backers a run for their money. He is a very highly-strung customer, and is easily upset.

Since the Ashburton meeting matters have been very quiet mi the local trotting tracks, and with no immediate engagements in sight quite a number of horses have been turned out of work. A few are being kept going in view of the South Canterbury meeting next month, but the classes at that fixture are of such a lengthy nature as to offer little opportunity for good horses. Those trainers who have prospective New Zealand Trotting Cup candidates in their stables are keeping them going, and should the tracks be in anything like good condit.on for the August meeting it is quite on the cards that several more horses will qualify'for the 4min 37 sec list.
