HAWKE’S BAY.

Beldams Fencing Well—’lnteresting: Jumping Essays at Hastings— Hawke’s Bay Candidates Nominated for Gisborne Racing Club’s Meeting. (From Our Napier Correspondent.) NAPIER, Monday. Mr. C. E. Twist is resting two of his team in King’s Boy and Pursefiller, neither of whom will be required until the spring. Perceler has been nominated for three events at the winter gathering of the Gisborne Racing Club. The chestnut gelding has not been hitting out as freely of late as has been the case with him previously. On Saturday morhing at - Napier some interesting jumping was gone /through. Beldame was sent for a once round circuit over the hurdles. The black mare fenced in a finished style, and between the obstacles cut out fast time. Prince Eddie, Maku, Kirkby and Fond Memory were sent for schooling exercises over the country impediments. After encompassing one circuit Kirkby was eased up, and the other trio went foi* another round.Fond Memory baulked repeatedly, and had no say in the finish, Prince Eddie coming out on top from Maku with a lot in hand.

Th o Napier Park tracks and course never appeared to better advantage at this period of the year than they do at present, and their condition reflects great credit on caretaker O’Halloran, who has been putting in his best to earn the favourable comment of all concerned.

At Hastings on Saturday morning the fencing contingent were greatly in evidence, and a lot of interesting essays were witnessed. Morning and Cousin Jack were associated in a once round go over the ’chasing fences. The latter was of no use to Morning at any portion of the bout. He certainly jumped cleverly, but between the fences he could not muster up enough pace to keep upsides with Mr. F. Armstrong’s gelding, who should be a hard proposition to overthrow in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase this week. Master Webb and The Mouse treat-

ed the onlookers to a rare exhibition during their twice round negotiation of the tall timber. Neither laid a toe on any of the obstacles, and finished up in good style. Defeat, on his own, wqint once round the country, and left nothing to be desired in the manner in which h? accomplished his task. Merry Jack had Forelight for a companion in a single circuit over the hurdles. The former, who is improving wi*h each lesson, had the most to say at the finish of the argument.

Hereford, who does not appear to have suffered any effects from the travelling and racing that has been his portion of late, accomplished good work on the plough. Hurakia and Vi got through similar work to Hereford. Vi was jumped last week, but did not take at all kindly to her portion, for she baulked upon several occasions. Braeburn, who still suffers from the enlarged knee which went against him some time back, had Sam Pan as a comrade in a once round circuit over the hurdles. The pair got through their work satisfactorily. Alces, who locks real wfell just at present, had Discussion for a mate in a once round spin. The former easily accounted for Discussion, who never at any stage of the argument had a possibility of getting on terms with Mr. P. Hunter s mare.

Will, a Merriwee gelding owned by Mr. F. Armstrong, of Akitio, has arrived at R. Gooseman’s quarters, where he will be stationed for some time. Will is engaged in the bracelet events at Hastings and Napier Park.

Although St. Fire and Golden Water did not fence on Saturday morning, on preceding mornings the pair demonstrated conclusively that they were proficient in the art of negotiating th? big fences. Makara has been leased by A. E. NealQ, of Greenmeadows, and the gelding is now being got ready for battle by him. A good number of local horses have been nominated for the winter fixture of the Gisborne Racing Club. The “Bay” contingent listed consists of Multipare, Multicipal, Bunting, Fond Memory, Beldame, Sensitive, Makara, Hurakia, Vi, King’s Guard, Braeburn, Immensity, Hymen, Maku, Diavolo, Perceler, Th? Mouse, Prince Eddie, Cousin Jack, Royal Mary, St. Fire, Bodenham, Kirkby, Campeador and Heather Mixture.

Birkful is back again at his home quarters at Greenmeadows. The big gelding is recovering from the effects of the mishap that overtook him when exercising at Ellerslie prior to the eventuation of the lat? winter venture of the Auckland Racing Club. At a meeting of the committee of the Napier Park Racing Club held on Friday afternoon, it was decided to donate 50 per cent, of the profit of the forthcoming meeting to the fund for assisting the wounded and invalided soldiers belonging to Hawke s Bay.
