CANTERBURY

i he Timaru Cup—Notes on the South Canterbury J.C.’s Meeting. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The South Canterbury Jockey Club had a splendid meeting, which opened on Thursday last. A useful though by no means high-class field of eight went out to contest the Timaru Cup, for which Specialform, who looked in splendid order, was made favourite. The Oamaru-trained All Ready had a strong following, as did Bonny Rigg. Just after the start Finder and All Ready closed in too quickly, which resulted in a mix-up, in which Bonny Rigg and Specialform were the worst sufferers. Getting out of trouble quickly, All Ready made play all

through, and when apparently caught at the distance by Golden King and Specialform struggled on again so gamely as to win by half a length. Specialform ran a sterling race under her big impost, and only for being interfered with might have won. Bonny Rigg showed a lot of speed in making up her lost ground, and it was only in the last hundred yards that she compounded. Daylight Bill showed his usual dash in the Liverpool Steeplechase, but with less than a circuit gone he attempted to jump the wing of a fence and staked himself. Stone Ginger was always in the first flight, and half a mile from home looked a certain winner. He got there, but it was only after a good contest with Fritz that lie just landed the stake by half a length. The Pole ran a fair race in getting third place, but his jumping was not too clean, while Ngatiruanui lost ground at every obstacle. Had not Daylight Bill met with his mishap it would have been a most interesting race.

Medley broke a long series of defeats by annexing the Gladstone Welter, and there was a fair amount of merit in her performance. After getting badly away in the running it was only in the last furlong that she got a clear passage. Encore was well placed all through, but at the finish had no chance with Medley, while Bandy showed a fair amount of speed but no stamina.

A first-class day’s racing was brought to a fitting conclusion by a dead-heat in the Doncaster Welter between Briar Patch and Leading Lady. Glenowl and John Bunyan were unfortunate at the start, this being the only mistake Mr. Harley seemed to make during the day.
