THE WANGANUI MEETING.

Another important metropolitan racing club fixture was got through with during the week, when the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was decided. There are few more popular racing reunion®, and it is estimated that the attendance constituted about the best ever seen on the course for a race meeting there at this or any time of the year. The Wanganui people had racing nearly 70 years ago in their district, and for about sixty years on their present course. What may have appeared like inconsistent form was the running of quite a number of the horses. In the Stewards’ Handicap Banksia was fourth and Fair Rosamond fifth and Leonta sixth behind Ladoga, Astor and Invader. In the Petre Hack Handicap Coldstream was fifth behind Avon Park, New York, Marimba and Fortify. Tirohanga was last of four in the Tayforth Hack Hurdles, Belasco was not in the first four in the Flying Handicap. Banksia won next day and her light weight rider was carpeted and asked some questions by the stipendiary stewards. The mare got galloped on the first day. The running of Ladoga next day did not make it look as if there was anything wrong with her form, however, on the first day. Fam Rosamond ran quite a different race in the Wanganui Stakes to what she did in the Stewards’, but Ladoga came and cut her down in the run home. She ran on the outside of her

field in the Stewards’ Handicap. The stipendiary steward had McFlynn, rider of Tirohanga, up and questioned him on the second day after his mount, who was an outsider, had squeezed home from the young gelding at the game Naupata and Master Strowan, who, it may not have been known to the stewards, was very lame afterwards. Tirohanga changed hands recently, and it was McFlynn’s opinion that he had been having an easy time and was short of work, as he had some allowance for his beating the first day it can be assumed that the race did him good. Belasco showed some improvement in the Farewell Handicap on which he did earlier, but the conditions were different and Postillion showed up worse than on the first day.

A number of horses got galloped on while racing at Wanganui, and bore the marks after their efforts.
