TURF RESULTS.

REEFTON JOCKEY CLUB. FIRST DAY. LADRONE WINS THE CUP. The midsummer racing carnival on the West Coast commenced with the Reef ton Jockey Club’s meeting, which was held on the club’s course in beautiful weather. The racing was of a much higher order than usual, on account of the better class of horses paying a visit to the coast meetings.

The opening event of the carnival saw nine horses face the barrier. Public fancy went for the Birkenhead colt Birkbeck, with the Blenheim horse Ruination next in the betting. Two outsiders in Don Chari and Bayform made the running, but Trilby, who was lying handy, came through at the distance and won comfortably. Five moderates was the main for the Point Handicap, a seven furlong event, for which the Charlemagne IL gelding Charlerose carried much more money than did the others. Crown Battery went away well, and kept the opposition moving, but Bonny Boy and The Nut put in a run, which, however, was made too late, for Crown Battery won with something to spare. The favourite got into third place, but his running was far below expectations. Royal Dragoon (who had only reached the township of Reefton from the North Island at about the time the big race was to take place) and Sir Hamilton were scratched for the Cup, leaving five good horses to go to the barrier. Alecto, Ladrone and Waipunui were better fancied than Monologue and Foam Flake, but the favourite never flattered his supporters. Ladrone and Monologue were quickest to begin, with Foam Flake in a good position. This position was maintained for the greater part of the journey, but in the last furlong, there was a good race for supremacy, but the aged son of Sir Laddo and Melusina proved superior and got the verdict by a length, a head separating Monologue and Foam Flake. Sveaborg wa? a much fancied horse for the five furlong event, but Royal Sleeves, who got a flier from the

barrier, lasted long enough to beat the favourite by a length. The totalisator proprietor, having received the order to “pay out,” had paid a goodly number of tickets, when it was found that Royal Sleeves had weighed in without the martingale. The machine at once discontinued paying, and after an enquiry the stewards awarded the race to Sveaborg and disqualified Royal Sleeves, but paid out on the latter horse.

The Boatman’s Handicap, six and a-half furlongs, was productive of six competitors, and the public made Jeannot a warm favourite, with the ancient Medallist next in demand. The favourite and Medallist were in front from the rise of the barrier till the post was passed, Jeannot getting there by a length.

Six saddled up for the Progress Handicap, and on the strength of her win earlier in the day Trilby was the public fancy. Crown Battery and Sveaborg made the early running, but in the straight Trilby challenged the leaders unsuccessfully, Sveaborg winning comfortably. Only four out of the eight acceptors went to the post in the Welter, for which Monologue was selected favourite. The favourite was in front for about six and a-half furlongs, when Foam Flake came through with a brilliant run and beat Mono’ogue by a couple of lengths. SECOND DAY.

A RECORD MEETING. The fine weather which prevailed for the opening day’s racing continued, and again some good racing was witnessed. The meeting the most successful ever held in Reefton, and the totalisator returns were a record, the sum of £12,703 passing through the machine as compared with £8,897 for the corresponding meeting last year, representing an increase of £3,806. Proceedings commenced with the County Handicap, which was responsible for five moderate sprinters going to the post. Casco was a good deal better supported than Kina, with Don Chari next in request. Kina went away with the lead and was well in front when he broke a blood vessel and had to be pulled up. Crown Battery eventually beat Casco by a neck. Six horses saddled up for the five furlong event, the Flying Handicap. Pride of place in the betting went to Excitement, who had a rather easy win from the second choice, Whisperer. Although her showing on the first day was a very poor one, Alecto once again was made a hot favourite for the principal event, Jeannot being next in demand. The race was a comparatively easy one for Jeannot, who came through at the distance and won comfortably. A good race for second place saw Foam Flake beat the speedy Royal Dragoon b< a head.

Only four saddled for the Junction Handicap, and Charlerose was made an odds on favourite, but he failed to get into a place. Sir Wallace won a good race by half a length from The Nut. with Glenongly third. The Cronadun Handicap attracted a field of four, and Moirette was a decided favourite. Medallist (second choice) was the quickest to begin, and was in front until the straight was reached, when Lambess moved up on the favourite and beat Medallist by a length. Monologue, Glenongly and Combination were the only ones to go ’to the post in the Welter, and Glen ongly refusing to leave the post, the race resolved itself into an exercise canter for Monologue, who strolled home an easy winner. The curtain was rung down on the six furlong F.-jlewell, Handicap, in which the favourite Sveaborg managed to just beat the Nautiform colt Bayform by a nose.
