AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. SECOND DAY. WALLACE WOOD AVINS SUMMER CUP. The Auckland Trotting Club were again favoured with perfect weather on Wednesday, when the second day’s racing in connection with their stunpier meeting was proceeded with in the presence of a large attendance. Some excellent competition was witnessed in the various events, the afternoon’s sport being of a high standard, the Southern horses lending much additional interest to the gathering. During the afternoon Dillon Bell made an attempt upon the New Zealand mile record, but failed by over six seconds to lower the existing figures. The totalisator staff were again kept extremely busy, no less a sum than £21,400 being handled, as against £17,985 on the corresponding day of last year, being an increase of £3415. All of the twelve horses carded in the Oak 'Handicap went to the post,

Biackthorn being a staunch favourite, while Auckland Girl was the only other starter to receive much support, though Doris Sal.sbury, Salvie Dash and Sam Dillon had their respective followings. Auckland Girl did not settle down too quickly, but once in her stride she rushed to the front and was never afterwards seriously troubled, winning easily by ten lengths from Blackthorn, who spoilt what chances he had of victory by breaking in the straight. Lady Heiress was eight lengths away, third. The Tramway Handicap provided trotting enthusiasts with the opportunity of witnessing Messrs. Richards and Weston’s high-priced colt Waverley in action, only three other horses accepting their engagements in the race in question. Waverley was made one of th 3 hottest favourites possible, few being prepared to support any one of his three opponents. The race proved the easy thing for Waverley

the betting indicated, for he got to the end of the mile in 2.24 without being extended, leading almost from start to finish. Linotype was three lengths away, second, and August Child a length and a-half away, third. The principal event, the Summer Cup, attracted half a dozen starters, Prince Rufus being the only horse to decline his engagement. Favouritism was shared by Jewel Chimes, who was conceded to have held an excellent chance of victory when he came down going along the back the last time m the Auckland Trotting Cup, and X.'allace Wood, who lost several seconds in the Cup by refusing to settle down at the start. The Australian i.i otter Harvey Huon was next best fancied, while support was also forthcoming for Stop It. The start was marred somewhat by Wallace M. standing on his mark, Stop It beingblocked in as a result. Wallace AVood began well, and trotting in good style was soon in the lead, Jewel Chimes being his closest attendant. The race thereupon resolved itself into a tussle between AVallace AVood and Jewel Chimes, the latter displacing AVallace Wood in the lead before rhe stand was readied, and in this order they completed the second circuit, Harvey Huon and Clive lying third and fourth respectively. Backers of Jewel Chimes were on good terms with themselves as the son of Abbey Bells commenced the last round with a couple of lengths advantage of Wallace Wood, but the latter put in a brilliant run along the back, passing the favourite, and it was apparent that the Forbury Park

Cup winner was assured of victory once the straight was entered. AVallace AVood increased his advantage in the straight, w.lining by a dozen lengths from Jewel Chimes, with Harvey Huon, who broke badly during the last circuit, two lengths away, third. Clive was fourth.

Much interest was centred in Dillon Bell’s attempt upon the New Zealand mile record of 2min. 8 3-ssec., lor a purse of 250sovs. Driven by M. Edwards, the son of Harold Dillon covered the ‘first half-mile in Imin. 2 3-ssec., but failed to show to advantage over the latter half, his time for the mile being 2min. 15sec., thus failing by G 3-ssec. to lower the existing record.

A quartette contested the Christmas Handicap, the presence of Prince Rufus, who ran brilliantly in the Cup on the opening day, when he finished second to Steel Bell, evidently accounting for the small field. Prince

Rufus was made a solid odds-on favourite, Annoyed being the only other to receive any degree of support. Annoyed acted as the pilot over the first couple of circuits, but was displaced by the favourite passing the stand the second time, and Prince Rufus easily held ths Young Salisbury mare safe over the concluding stages, winning by a dozen lengths from Annoyed, who just defeated St. Trella by half a head for second honours. Fourteen comprised the field for the Epsom r frot Handicap, in which Olive L. counted most supporters, with Gray W., Syren and Tod Bells next best fancied. When the stand was reached the second time Gray AA\ was in the lead, with Syren, Autocrat and Hova close up. Syren raced into the lead going along the back, and was first to turn for home, with Gray W. and Hova both handy. A great tussle took place up the straight between Hova and Syren, the former gain.ng the verdict by a neck, with Gray AV. three lengths away, third, and Lady Wilmington fourth. Syren trotted much better throughout than on the open_ng day, when he was disqualified for galloping in the straight, and with ordinary luck would have reversed positions with Hova. Olive L. spoilt a good chance by breaking badly a couple of times during the race. On his running in the Summer Cup Jewel Chimes was made an odds-on favourite for the Ranfurly Handicap, Alf. McKinney being second choice and the Sydney trotter Buff next best favoured. The race proved an easy task for the favourite, who was in the lead passing the stand the first

time, and had matters practically all his own way throughout, winning by a dozen lengths from Phyllistina, who lasted just long enough to defeat Specialist by a head for second place. Buff started well, opening up a gap of several lengths, but broke before completing a hundred yards and would not settle down to his task after.

Backers made Sundial a very hot favourite for the Dominion Handicap, her double victory at the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s spring meeting not being overlooked. Lord John and Walnut were well supported. The favourite let her backers down badly, as she lost several seconds on the mark, and even after getting away did not even show a glimpse of her form. The limit horse Lord John took up the running and kept his position throughout, winning by a head from the scratch horse, AValnut, with Huia Grey three lengths away, third. Seven contested the Dash Handicap,

in which Silver Grid was backed down to odds on, Mummel Bob being a strong second fancy, Avith Ben F. and Kirwee best backed of the others. The favourite lost several seconds at the start, prejudicing Avhatever chances she possessed. The Sydney representative Mummel Bob immediately went to the front and Avas never headed, winning by a dozen lengths from Ao-tea-roa, avlio paid a good dividend for second. Silver Grid was half a dozen lengths away, third. The results were: —

The meeting was brought to a conclusion on Wednesday, the weather again being all that could be desired, while the public assembled in strong force to participate in the afternoon’s sport. The fields were large, and several exciting finishes were witnessed, the big event in particular resulting in a great race up the straight between the Australian horse Harvey Huon and Hal Zolock, th a latter gaining the verdict by half a head. Two members of the Australian team of trotters were successful during the afternoon, Dillon Bell reg.stering an attractive performance in the Onslow Handicap, which he won from scratch, while Adelaide Direct annexed the Premier Handicap in brilliant style. The meeting was capably managed by Mr. C. F. Mark, the energetic secretary, and proved in every respect a record for a trotting gathering in Auckland. During the afternoon the sum of £.19,056 passed through the totalisator, as against £16,512 on the concluding day of last year’s meeting. The total investments for the three days amounted to £65,515, as compared with £58,289 10s. for the 1913 fixture, being an increase of £7225 10s.

The presence of Lord Lonsdale in the Tamaki Handicap robbed that event of much interest, for he was the

only candidate in a field of fourteen to receive any support to speak of. Blackthorn, who carried less than a

quarter of the amount invested on the favourite, was second fancy. The public’s summing up proved correct, fop after causing his supporters some anxiety by failing to settle down in the early part of the race Lord Lonsdale soon placed the isues beyond doubt, winning comfortably from Blackthorn by four lengths, Miss Marvin Downs being twelve lengths away third. Scientist was fourth and King of Diamonds fifth. Seven contested the Park Handicap, in which Belgian Queen was easily the heaviest backed, Franzaine and Mount Albert also counting many admirers. Belgian Queen lost whatever chance she possessed by fa'ling to strike a gait at the start, while Wapiti also stopped on the mark. Mount Albert took up the running, while his most dangerous opponent throughout was Lady Zeppelin, who left her mark without any trouble. As the pair raced along the back the last time it appeared almost certain that Lady Zeppelin would register her second ■win at the meeting, but she broke badly three furlongs from home, Franzaine running up second. Mount Albert maintained her advantage to the post, and though Lady Zeppelin made a good recovery the best she could do was to defeat Franzaine by a head for second. Rosie Gray was fourth. The President’s Handicap, in which

eight faced the starter, proved a good betting race, Hal Zolock being an almost even money favourite, while Harvey Huon, Fashionwood, Denver Huon and Steel Bell were next fancied in that order. The favourite, who was on the limit mark, made the pace lively from the si art, and if was apparent early in the race that Harvey Huon was the only competitor likely to extend the American crack. Hal Zolock had command passing the stand the second time, Harvey Huon within a length of the leader, with Stop It and Steel Bell following in the order named. The favourite increased his advantage going along the back and entered the straight with a comfortable lead, but in the run to the post Harvey Huon showed a great burst of speed and appeared unlucky to have suffered defeat by half a head. Steel Bell was six lengths away, third, while Denver Huon and Fashionwood were the next to finish. The Association Trot Handicap saw eleven go to the post, and of these the chances of Floranz, Olive L., Gray W. and Tod Bells were most fancied. Backers of the favourite were doomed to disappointment, for Floranz collided with a spectator and lost any chance she possessed of annexing the event. Syren was quickly in the lead, and capably handled by Williams did pot break anything like in her two previous essays, and never at any

period looked to be in danger of defeat. Both Tod Bells and Olive L. spoilt their chances by breaking, Syren defeating the latter by ten lengths, with Tod Bells just beaten out of second place. Lady Wilmington was fourth and Kirikiriroa 'fifth. The New Year Handicap attracted a septette, Kitty Tux being installed an odds-on favourite, with the Australian trotter Kempsey second in request. The race proved a runaway victory for the latter, who gave a muchimproved display on his frst day’s running, when he failed to settle down, though he ran better later in the afternoon when he finished second to Copper King. Kempsey won the New Year Handicap pulling up, the favourite being a poor second, with Wereoa Jiree lengths away third. Fifteen started in the Onslow Hand'eap, Kirwee being the elect of backers, while solid support was forthcoming for Alf. McKinney, Buff, Phyllistina and Grampian. Buff left his mark smartly and was going well in the lead passing the stand, Alf. McKinney and Duke Fly being his nearest attendants. The latter ran up second going along the back, but during the run to the entrance to the straight Buff broke and Dick Fly’s sulky caught the wheel of the former’s sulky, the pair being brought to a standstill, causing considerable interference to

the field. Phyllistina was first to turn for home, but in the straight Dillon Bell put in a phenomenal run and gained a three lengths’ victory from Phyllistina, with Alt. McKinney a couple of lengths away, third. St. Ursula was fourth.

Muriel Derby was entrusted with most support of the thirteen contest ants in the Telegraph Handicap, Lord Victor, Pakotui, Ao-tea-roa and Ben F. being the next choice of backers. The race resulted in a victory for Pakotui, which won in hollow fashion by e.ght lengths from an outsider in Annoyed, with Lord Victor three lengths away third, just in front of Bell Gray. The favourite, Muriel Derby, came to grief going out of the straight. Adelaide Direct was made a good favourite for the concluding race, the. Premier Handicap, in which there were eight starters, Floranz and Linotype being the only others to count much support. The favourite was responsible for a brilliant performance, for she passed the field one by one until Kempsey was the only horse in advance of her once the straight was entered. It looked a vain task for the favourite to catch Kempsey, but she gradually overhauled her opponent, winning, amidst intense excitement, by two lengths, with Linotype a dozen lengths away, third. Pearl D’Or was fourth. Results: —
