RACING REVIEWED.

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

SECOND DAY.

GOLDSIZE WINS SUMMER CUP.

The Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was continued on Tuesday of last week in fine weather. There was again a fine attendance, and the large sum of £51,134 10s. was passed through the totalisators, as against £45,003 last year, the increase being £6131 10s. Results appeared in our last issue. The North Shore-owned mare Looma ran fully up to her best track form when she chased Bonny Rigg home in the Bowen Handicap. The winner scored somewhat easily, giving her supporters back nearly 100 per cent, profit on their outlay. Christmas Rose was well supported, but ran very poorly after her deadheat with Salvia on the opening day. She cannot carry weight too well, and 8.10 seemed to smother her.

Punters got a real shock when they saw Merry Roe take their odds-on fancy Warstep off her legs in the Islington Plate, and stay the mile out in the good time of lmin. 39sec. Mr. Hall’s mare fairly slipped the field, and the interference by Prince Soult with Balboa did not help that colt’s chance. Mullingar was unfortunately placed hors de combat early through breaking a blood vessel.

Kitty Bellairs ran up to her best track traditions when she skipped away from 15 opponents in the Visitors’ Handicap and gave nothing a chance to dispute her claims, registering lmin. for the five furlongs, a recordj for the track. Hymettius ran well, and so did Postillion and Downham, the last-named pair finishing fast.

Spalfish jumped too brilliantly and fast for Kilmeny and Fashion Plate and the rest of the field in the Ponsonby Hurdle Handicap, and had a comfortable win. Gcldsize, who is probably one of the best track horses in the Dominion, performed "up to his track showing by running home a nice winner in the Summer Cup in 2min. 7 l-ssec. Prior to the race Goldsize ran seven furlongs outside three trestles in lmin. 31sec._ equal to a mile in lmin. 43 3-ssec. over the same track. His backei-b got a good dividend. Hyettus and Allegation ran well, and Royal Irish, who did not seem himself, ran surprisingly well. Chortle finished fifth but disappointed his friends. The Criterion Handicap served to show the Auckland-owned colt Arran in a most favourable light, the son of Marble Arch defeating his seven opponents in convincing style, the field including the Southern two-year-olds Wishful, Marco Bello, Snub and Freya. Seventeen contested the Waitemata Handicap, Snapdragon being made a solid favourite, with Hadj and El Gallo next best backed. The latter won in good style by a couple of lengths from Makura, who had the services of J. Buchanan, while Kaween was third.

Beldame caused something of a surprise by winning the Salisbury Welter in decisive fashion from Iliad’s Hero and Patronale, the daughter of Royal Fusilier staying the mile out in quite an unexpected manner after leading practically all the way, Iliad’s Hero being the only horse to trouble her in the early stages.

THIRD DAY. MARSHAL MCDONALD ANNEXES RACING CLUB HANDICAP. REPUTATION SCORES IN DERBY. New Year’s Day was a record one at Ellerslie in several ways, the attendance being excellent, while the otalisator investments exceeded the sum handled on Boxing Day by £llll. The racing was of a most keen character, large fields being productive of some highly exciting finishes. With the weather all that could be desired and the track in splendid order the success of the afternoon’s racing was assured, for there Avas no lack of spirited betting, the quality of the fields being conducive to brisk speculation. The sum of £67,257 10s. was invested on the machine, as against £63,780 last year constituting a new record for the Dominion for one day’s racing. Despite his failure to run into a place in the Shortland Plate on the opening day Soultane Avas sent out favourite for the Ferguson Handicap, Belasco, Loloma and Fionnula being the heaviest backed of the other nine starters. Fionnula, who had the services of Emmerson caused consider-

able delay at the post, and when finally she disposed of her rider and galloped away in the opposite direction the field was released without her. Coleraine and Soultane had the best, of the start, and the latter held command round.ng the home turn, with Manukau in second position and Coleraine next. The favourite finished strongly, and had no difficulty in warding off a challenge from Coleraine, who lasted just long enough to bear the fast-finishing Belasco by a neck for second, the judge’s verdict being a two lengths’ victory for Soultane. Loloma was fourth and Centre fifth. The New Year’s Hurdle Race brought out six runners, Kilmeny being the only withdrawal. Hereford was installed a warm favourite, while the local jumpers Admiral Soult and Spalfish were most fancied of the others. Spalfish was early in the lead and carried the field along at a good pace, but came to grief five furlongs from home, through making a faulty jump. The son of Spalpeen appeared to have the race well in hand at time of falling, and it was ill-luck that he should have struck the third obstacle from home after jumping his hurdles in proficient style. Admiral Soult immediately took up the running, and was joined in the straight by Hereford, the pair contesting every inch of ground after clearing the last

hurdle, Admiral Soult beating the favourite by a neck, with Cloudy Dawn, who ran a good race, two lengths away third. Erindale broke a blood vessel early in the race and was pulled up. Mr. Angus Gordon, stipendiary steward, ordered an inquiry regarding the riding of Hereford, on whom Deerey had the mount, it being considered that the Southerner should not have suffered defeat. As the horse had been backed by his connections to win a goodly sum, Deerey being laid a fair amount by the owner for a win, the charge was dismissed after a brief hearing. Nine two-year-olds saddled up for the Midsummer Handicap, for which Sutala ruled a hot odds-on favourite, Housewife being the only other contestant to receive much backing. Mr. Greenwood’s colt fully justified the confidence of his supporters, for he began smartly and Avon comfortably by a couple of lengths from Housewife, with the Hawke’s Bay colt Marco Bello three-quarters of a length a.AvaA r third. Lightning Avas fourth. The Great Northern Derby attracted five runners, Reputation, Balboa, Don Francisco, Bedford and Roumania being fancied in that order the firstnamed being a warm odds-on favourite, over five thousand pounds being

invested on his number. Bedford Avas quickest to begin, and he led the field past, the stand, Don Francisco and Roumania lying next, with the favourite in fourth position. This order Avas maintained going out of the straight, but at the mile post Reputation made a forward move and Avas on terms Avith Bedford as the seven furlongs post Avas reached, Avhile Balboa commenced to make up some of his leeAvay. The favourite was going great guns, and Avith half the distance covered looked a certain Avinner, though it was not until racing to the straight entrance that he Avent to the front, Avhile Balboa Avas rushed up into second position. Reputation easily held the Hawke’s Bay colt safe in the run to the judge’s box, gaining an easy victory by three lengths amid vociferous cheering. Don Francisco Avas three lengths aAvay third, Bedford fourth and Roumania last.

Bimeter, on his close third in the Raihvay Handicap, Avas selected as the most likely to score of the thirteen Avhich saddled up for the NeAvmarket Handicap, Sauci, Postillion, King Lupin, Downham and Crown Pearl next best supported in the order named. Hymettius Avas first into the straight followed by Goldfire, with the favourite in third position. In the run to the post Bimeter headed the field, with Bee as his nearest attend-

ant, and in a desperate finish the favourite Avon by a head from Bee, with King Lupin, who finished resolutely, a neck away third. Postillion, Avho got away at the tail end of the field and met with considerable interference four furlongs from home, Avas fourth, and Sauci fifth. Ten Avent to the post for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, in which La Reina ruled a strong favourite on the machine, Sir Knox also being solidly backed, Avhile Sea Pink and Allegation Avere both in keen demand. G-loy piloted the field in the early stages, but four furlongs from home Jolie Fille. displaced the son of Gluten, Avith St. Elmn and Marshal McDonald both handy. Marshal McDonald led into the straight, Avith St. Elmn, Sea Pink and La Reina as his nearest attendants. Sea Pink threAv out a strong challenge and appeared to have the disappointing son of Soult beaten, but Clarke called on Marshal McDonald for a final effort, and the pair raced past the judge’s box locked together, the judge declaring the latter the winner by half a head from Sea Pink, Avith the unlucky La Reina a length aAvay third. St. Elmn Avas fourth, and Allegation and Sir Knox next.

No less than twenty saddled up for the Maiden Handicap, Football being made a good favourite, Avith Camulus, Salvia and Makura best backed of the remainder. The race resulted in a surprise victory for Lady Penury, who won comfortably from Hadj by tAVo and a-half lengths, with the favourite, Football, a length aAvay, third. Backers Avent solidly for Beldame n the GlasgoAv Handicap who carried more than double the money invested " i the second choice, Hyettus, while Iliad’s Hero, Patronale, Tinopai, Vocation and Castalia Avere the best, supported of the other eleven runners. The favourite Avas caught in the tapes as the barrier lifted and her chances spoilt. Iliad’s Hero led into the straight and looked all over a winner until Tinopai, finishing with a brili’ant run, headed the Southern representative and gained a meritorious "ictory by tAvo lengths, Avith Castalia a similar distance aAvay third. Vocat on was fourth and Hyettus fifth. ’fhe results were: —

The Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival was concluded on Saturday under most auspicious circumstances, the meeting proving by far the most successful on record in

New Zealand. Racegoers turned out in strong force, despite that it was the seventh day’s racing in Auckland in eight days, and that they brought plenty of the sinews of war was apparent when the totalisator figures came to be made up for the day, no less than £60,075 10s. passing through the totalisator, as against £53,016 on the concluding day of the 1913-14 summer gathering, being an increase of £7059 10s. The total for the four days amounted to £244,614, compared with £225,410 at the previous Cup gathering, being an increase of £19,204. Racing commenced with the Goodwood Handicap, in which there were fifteen starters, Beldame again being entrusted with most support, though Monojack was a good second favourite, while Tinopai, Bedford and Vocation were all well backed. Beldame got away well and was first into the straight, where Monojack and Bedford joined issue with her and an exciting race ensued, Moncjack prevailing by a neck from Bedford, with Beldame, who had everything in her favour, a similar distance away third. Tinopai was fourth and Patronale, who was slow to move, fifth. The Sylvia Handicap, for which eight two-year-olds sported silk, resolved itself into a good betting race between Loyal Arch and Housewife, the former being the favourite, while none of the others were accorded much support. The public summing up was accurate, for the consistent Loyal Arch defeated her Australianbred rival by a neck, with March a length away third and Lightning fourth.

Jack Delaval was the popular fancy for the Grandstand Handicap, which constituted his first engagement since contesting the Auckland Cup.

Of the thirteen starters Chortle, Royal Irish, and Sea Pink were also the medium of a fair amount of support. Chortle went to the front racing along the back of the course, Tangiwai and Prince Soult being handy, but once the straight was entered it was plainly apparent that the Gisborne crack had the race in safe keeping, for he won as he liked by two lengths and a-half from an outsider in Phosphorus, with Goldsize two lengths away third. Soldier was fourth. Jack Delaval finished fifth. Sea Pink, Allegation, Royal Irish and La Reina all ran disappointingly. The Royal Stakes produced a field of eight, the Great Northern Foal Stakes winner, Desert Gold, being the prime fancy of backers, with Sutala (bracketed with Banksia) the next best backed. The Auckland colt Arran also carried a good deal of money. The race proved a repetition of the Foal Stakes running so far as the placed horses were concerned for Desert Gold again defeated Sutala by a neck, while Wishful again filled third position, the race between the former pair being an exciting one. Arran, who was never in the fighting line, finished fourth. Hereford was made a pronounced favourite for the Auckland Hurdle Race, in which there were seven runners, Kilmeny, Fashion Plate and Admiral Soult all claiming a host of admirers. The favourite never left the issue in doubt, for he was always in a handy position, and though challenged by Kilmeny in the straight easily outpaced that gelding and gained the verdict by three lengths. Fashion Plate was four lengths away third, and Cloudy Dawn fourth. Admiral Soult lost several lengths at the start and was unable to get up

with the leaders, though he made a plucky effort over the concluding stages. Notwithstanding previous disappointing displays at the meeting, tne public reposed sufficient confidence in Sauci to send him out a strong favourite for the County Handicap, the unlucky Postillion being second in request, while Bfee and Iliad s Hero, both of whom had form to recommend them, were heavily supported. Neither Sauci nor Postillion were eveT in a position to flatter their supporters, the finish being fought out by Iliad’s Hero, who led from the barrier rise, Colonel Soult and Bee, the first-named defeating the fast finishing Auckland gelding by half a head, with Bee half a length away third. Postillion, who moved off too slowly to be troublesome, managed to run close up fourth.

Three candidates, Warstep, Merry Roe and Marshal McDonald, were saddled up to oppose Reputation in the Auckland Plate, in which the Great Northern Derby winner was made as hot a favourite as when he romped home in the big classic event on the previous day. Many keen judges were to be found investing on Warstep, end their judgment proved correct. The prospects of an exciting race were quickly dispelled, for Warstep made the pace a cracker, opening up a big gap from the favourite in the early stages, and a mile from home backers of Reputation became uneasy. Warstep continued to pilot the field without apparent effort, and a quarter of a mile from home appeared assured of victory, as both Reputation and Merry Roe were being hard ridden. Warstep entered the straight with a commanding lead, and the dual Cuj

winner had no difficulty in passing the post a winner by a clear three lengths from Reputation, with Merry Roe four lengths away third. The meeting was concluded with the Grey Handicap, in which there were fourteen starters. Bonny Rigg was made a pronounced favourite, another Southern representative in Belasco being second choice, while the Aucklanders Gold Necklet, Coleraine and Christmas Rose also claimed solid support. The Porirua representative, which was J. Prosser’s only candidate at the meeting, was quickest to begin, and ran home an easy winner by a couple of lengths from Munster, /with Gpld Necklet three-parts of a length away third. Christmas Rose was fourth, and the favourite fifth. The results were: — GOODWOOD HANDICAP of 350sovs; second 70sovs, third 30sovs from the stake. One mile. 2 F.
