MOTORING ITEMS.
One of the most useful arterial roads in New Zealand, and one of the most costly, is the broad highway which connects Wellington with the Hutt Valley. Upon this road has been spent £lOO,OOO of the public funds, and over it rages the controversy of speed. Much vexation to motorists generally arises by the misbehaviour of a few speed fiends, and the subject has been a bone of contention between motorists and the Borough Councils of the Lower Hutt and Petone. Up to date the Councils have won twentyseven of the cases brought against breakers of the by-laws. At a recent meeting the Council complained that the fines imposed for speed infringement were not of a substantial nature, and it was agreed to write to the Minister of Justice and call attention to the small fines inflicted. The Wellington Automobile Association is doing its best to discourage excessive speed upon crowded highways, but the smooth surface of the broad road is a temptation to which young blood oft-times succumbs.
