Shipment of Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s Horses Leave for Sydney—A Strong Working Gallop—Addition to P. Longley's String. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) MONDAY, June 8. The southerly gale that swept over the South Island on Wednesday interfered seriously with the success of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting and that of the Canterbury Park Trotting fixture. It also left the tracks at Riccarton in a very bad state, and it was not till Saturday morning that they were fit to do any work on. Quite a large contingent of local horses were taken to Wingatui, but they were not over successful in their essays. Most of them returned to

Riccarton on Friday, and the balance on Saturday. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s horses Cherubini, Valhalla, Bimeter, Camulus, and the two-year-old Nenno, by Achilles —Chinwag, were shipped to Sydney on Thursday by the s.s. Moeraki. During the trip across the horses will be under the care of the foreman of R,. J. Mason’s stable, B. Lisle. Salathiel was again on his bad behaviour at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, and by a slovenly jump threw his rider, F. Douglas, out of his saddle at the third obstacle. Sunteam, Daylight Bill and Andrea did a strong working gallop on the sand track at Riccarton on Saturday morning. The first-named was going much tetter than his stable companion when the winning post was reached. Daylight Bill, on the outside, finished close up third, while Andrea was under pressure over the last part of the journey, and was

defeated by about a length. The trio leave for Hawke’s Bay this evening (Monday). P. Coffey arrived from Dunedin on Friday with the hurdler Kurnalpi. He left by the ferry steamer for the North on Saturday. A. McAuley has returned the yearling full-sister to Signorile to her owner, Mr. A. W. Rutherford. She will be turned out for a. twelve months I .’ respite on her owner’s station. P. McGrath’s pair, Tannhauser and Thrax, are at present enjoying a run in the paddock. They are to be taken in hand again in the near future with a view to racing at the Grand National meeting. R. Longley has an addition to his team in the Lupin mare Lupin Girl. She is a rough and ready sort, and is to be schooled over hurdles in the near future. J. McCombe Takes Up His Headquarters at Riccarton —Flora Macdonald Resumes Work. His many friends will be pleased to learn that Starter Piper is making a good recovery from the operation he underwent a fortnight ago. He will be about sound and well in plenty of time to take up his starting duties at the beginning of next season. The Southland trainer J. McCombe has acquired the property lately occupied by C. Giesler on the Riccarton Road. McCombe’s team, consisting of Bon and Afton Loch, are expected to arrive from the South in the course of a few days. F. Christmas has recommissioned the Daystar mare who was blistered and turned out for a spell some time ago. She is looking on the big side, and her legs appear to have fined down considerably during her enforced respite. The Dunedin Cup winner Flora Macdonald has resumed work. Her front legs, which were treated to a good blister, appear to be quite sound. The three-year-old filly Formal, by Boniform —Signal, has been leased by her owner, Mr. Prosser, to a Southern sportsman. Don Chari has been given a couple of runs over hurdles lately, and shapes as if he will make, a proficient hurdler. He is a bit on the youngside yet for a jumper, but when one takes into consideration the very poor lot that are. racing over hurdles in the South Island he may pay his way.
