PRINCESS DORRIE WINS THE OAKS.

The One Thousand Guineas winner, Princess Dorrie, by Your Majesty— Doris, owned by Mr. J. B. Joel, if unlucky as a two-year-old, is making good this year, for on Friday she won the Oaks, and it would appear that she is going to prove a stayer. In her One Thousand Guineas race she beat Glorvina, who had previously defeated her at two years old, and Torchlight, another that had won at the same age last season. Princess Dorrie has thus followed in the footsteps of Wheel of Fortune (1879), Thebais (1881), Busybody (1884), Miss Jummy (1886), Reve d’ Or (1887), Mimi (1891), La Fleche (1892), who also won the St. Leger, Amiable (1894), Sceptre (1902), who also won the St. Leger and Two Thousand Guineas; Pretty Polly (1904), who won the St. Leger also, Cherry Lass (1905), and Jest, who won last year. Mr. Joel is a lucky owner, indeed. Only Sceptre and La Fleche have won more than two of. the classics during the past thirty-eight years, and it remains now to be seen whether Princess Dorrie will secure the St. Leger and thus equal La Fleche’s performance, as she cannot now do as Sceptre did. The Oaks was established as long back as 1779, or 125 years ago, and is a year older than the Derby. THE TETRARCH. “Somebody occupying a big position in racing has sent me a new —or, at any rate, an unpublished—version of The Tetrarch’s trouble, which caused his withdrawal from the English Derby, for which he ruled a strong favourite for many months (says an English writer). This repeats the story of the colt hitting a foreleg when galloping, but gives a different account of the firing process. Some people have asserted he was only pinfired, while others say it was an ordinary firing job. According to my informant it was the fetlock that Mr. Coleman, the veterinary surgeon, operated on, and he adds, ‘This did not quite cure him—he still hits it. Also, his forelegs have not grown in the right way.’ This information is, I think, correct.”
