IMPORTED TROTTING STUD SALE

The well-known southern auctioneers, Messrs H- Matson and Co., Christchurch, in conjunction with Messrs. Friedlander Bros., Ashburton, have an important announcement in this issue to trotting horse owners and breeders. They are selling on April 11th at Durbar Lodge, on account of Mr. H. F. Nicoll, one of the best-known trotting horse owners and studmasters, his entire stud of horses, consisting of three high-class stallions, eight brood mares, ten horses in training, and thirteen young horses from one to three years old, all bred on approved lines; indeed, it is doubtful whether such an opportunity of securing first-class trotting and pac-ijng-bred stock, the property of one owner, has been presented to breeders and racing owners at one time before. Mr. Nicoll has for years identified himself with the lightharness sport, and has been one of the most successful owners and developers of speed in the Dominion, arid it will be with regret that many will learn of his intended retirementThe stallion Rothschild, the Stockwell among trotting sires in Australasia, and two highly-bred sons in Lord Derby and St. Swithin comprise the stallion list, and Rothschild is fully represented in the lots of all ages in the catalogue, while' Lord Derby has, we are assured, some splendid yearlings. Wildwood, Prince Imperial, Young Irvington, Viancleve, King Harold, and Rothschild are each represented in the brood mare list, and the horses in training are by Rothschild, Quincey, Advance, Royal Stranger, and Kerrwood, and the names of Mayfield, Pearlchild, Ladychi,ld, Hazelfield, Salcombe, Lyndhurst and Gianella are familiar to racegoers. Rothschild, Lord Derby, Satinwood, and King Tracy are sires of the young trotting stock from the mares that are to be submitted, some of whose names are familiar as producers, while the deeds of others on the various courses on which they competed are still fresh in the memories of followers of this popular form of sport.
