THE AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.

The programme announced by the Australian Jockey Club for its autumn meeting next month is unique tn the history of the Australian turf, inasmuch as the prize-money of £27,600 for the 24 events scheduled has not hitherto been approached. It includes nine events, each of which runs into four 'figures, ranging from 1000 to 50Q0sovs; two, carrying 750 sovs each, one of 600sovs, and a dozen endowed with 500sovs each. All classes of horses are catered for, and liberal support may be taken for granted when the general entry closes with the secretary, Mr. C. W. Cropper, at 4 pm. on Monday, the 23rd inst. ,

A cable from Melbourne announces that a fire occurred in Woods’ stables at Caulfield on the llth, and one racehorse, named Light Ballast, was burned to death,, while another, Taynan, was terribly 1 injured. A stableboy, Fenee, was badly burned in attempting to rescue the horses.

There was. a good attendance of buyers, and the sale was the most successful that has ever b en held in the district.
