WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB.

GOLDIE WINS THE CUP. (From our Special Correspondent.)

WANGANUI, February 27. A fair crowd rolled up to-day to take an interest in the first day’s gathering of the Wanganui Trotting Club’s cup carnival, which was held on the Wanganui Jockey Club’s racecourse. Goldie, who has an unbeaten record, won the Cup very decisively, while the chestnut’s owner, Mr. B. Shadbolt, of Waipukurau, also won the concluding race of the afternoon with Copper King, who, however, had to undergo the ordeal of an inquiry for inconsistency, but, after taking evidence, no action was considered necessary. The seven events on the afternoon’s programme were chiefly remarkable for tne easy manner in which they were won, in some instances hundreds of yaras separated the winners, whilst on occasions when the victor was passing the winning post, others were toiling away six furlongs from home. Mr. W. G. Garrard, of Christchurch, was in attendance as special convoy from the New Zealand Trotting Association to watch the proceedings, while Mr. F. Hanlon, of Auckland, had charge of the timing arrangements in the several events. Both gentlemen attended to their duties in a thorough manner. Mr. S. W. Moffett made an admirable secretary, the details being capitally a. ranged, while Mr. H. M. S'peed, who occupied the judge’s box, created a very favourable impression by the manner in wfiicn he hoisted the numbers.

Money was very plentiful, the totalisator staff handling £6848 compared with £3993 for the corresponding day last year. Results:—

Reuben, the winner of the Dominion Handicap and the Otahuhu T.C. Cup, was not a howling success last season, as out of eight starts he managed to ran a brace of seconds at the Otahuhu T.C. Summer meeting, and the pre vious year won a small race and was placed twice. The Weymouth trainer had Reuben in good condition. He apparently won his two races without being unduly pressed or distressed. Messrs. L. Richards and J. Weston had a fair stake on each race their horse scored in, and in the last event the horse paid a good dividend. The partners must be well ahead of their first attempt as trotting owners,
