Mai Cara, a shapely two-year-old filly by Boniform —Carissima, owned by Mr. Wifi Tokena, the non de p.ume of a popular Wanganuite, and trained by F. Shearsby at Awapuni, created a surprise I>y winning the Metropolitan Handicap on Thursday - The daughter of Field Battery—Trix put up an excellent 1 erformance, and in the mare the

genial “Alt” has the makings of a capital performer. There~was £6547 invested" on the totalisator in the Wellington Cup, which is in marked contrast to the £12,000 odd that was indicated on the machine in the Auckland Cup. M. McDonald, who is riding in good form, intends visiting the Takapuna meeting. As he can go to scale at a handy weight, no doubt hiS' services will be in demand during the progress of the two days’ campaign. Bronze was quite one of the disappointments in the Cup and failed

to show, a bold, front. The. Field Battery mare appears to have trained off, but she' is one of those class of horses that may pop up when least expected. . <? i Mr. F. Hall’s Bleriot just missed the Wellington Cup by. a narrow margin, the daughter of Soult beating all but the winner. A win for the Gisborne sportsman in the big Trentham event would have been popularly received in all parts of New Zealand. Mr. H. L. Jackson, of Blenheim, passed through Wellington last week on his way to Foxton to see his horse Imarose race in the Foxton Cup. The chestnut son of Conqueror acted as runner-up to the winner (Lady Laddo).. Supporters of the chestnut were rewarded with a nice dividend as a result of his exertions in the event named. Lady Laddo, trained by F. J. Garment at Levin, had a very easy win in the Foxton Cup on Thursday last.

The hurdle horseman W. Adams, who is not usually seen on flat races, piloted Lady Laddo in her contest. The mare returned her 140 ticket-holders on the totalisator a very acceptable two-figure dividend. The Patronus —Pauline gelding Tikorangi, formerly an inmate of W. J. Crozier’s New Plymouth stable, has developed soreness and has been turned out for a spell. A respite in the paddock should soon restore Tikorangi to his usual state of activity. * * * * The Sydney trainer, H. Raynor, put up one of his best performances at Randwick by training six winners. W. H. McLachlan rode a like number, including three of the abtove trainer’s charges.
