The third series of the Auckland Cricket Association’s championship matches were commenced in fine weather on Saturday, when, however, with the exception of a century compiled by the Grafton .. batsman, E. Horspool (113 not out), there was nothing remarkable, about the play of the senioi’ teams. With Horspool batting in his best form, the were able to give the North Shore men an afternoon’s leather hunting. Another good batting performance was that of Savaurin (also of Grafton), who put together 56 runs. The best bowling average was registered by Woods, of Ponsonby, who took five wickets for 26 runs, the next best being that estabilshed by Hay, the Eden trundler, with four wickets for 40 runs. Parnell v. Eden. —The Parnell men went to the wickets first, but were only responsible for a moderate response, being all dismissed for 155 runs (Grenier 45, Wright 20, Olliff 11, Stephens 17 not out, Bennett 37). For Eden, Hay took four wickets for 40 runs, I. Mills four for 47, and Cummings two for 26. The Eden team made a good start with their first innings, and when stumps were drawn they had 75 runs on the board for two wickets (Hemus 37, Taylor 29, Cummings 8 not out). For Parnell, Olliff took two wickets for 32 runs.

Grafton v. North Shore. — This match was played at Devonport, and the Grafton batsmen were, with the aid of E. Horspool and Sauvarin, able to put up the substantial score of 303 runs (McCormick 10, Sauvarin 56, E. Horspool 113 not out, Mason 18, Caro 17, W. , Horspool 16, Patterson 13). For North Shore, Dacre took four wickets for 47, Townhend two for 32, Howden one for 80, Archer one for 5.2, Harper one for 19, and Sale one for 5. North Shore then opened their first innings, and during the short time that remained scored 3 runs for no wickets.

University v. Ponsonby.—University were in poor batting form in their match against Ponsonby at Victoria Park, the students being unable to withstand the deadly bowling of the Ponsonby men. University’s total only reached 85 runs (Caradus 16, Airey 11, Jacobsen 14). For Ponsonby, Snedden took three wickets for 29 runs, Woods five for 26, and Kavanagh one for 13. Ponsonby then went to the wickets, and placed 147 runs to their credit for four wickets (Woods 15, Kavanagh 16, C. Snedden 36, Wilson 46 not out, Gavin 25).
