SOUTHERN STAGE NOTES.

WELL INGTON •

(By

“Lorgnette.”)

WELLINGTON, August 2 6. As predicted in my notes last week, the J- C. Williamson pantomime, “Sinbad the Sailor,”' is enjoying a phenomenally successful season at the Opera House. 7 Standing room is at a discount at each performance,

even the matinees being packed by old and young, and one hears nothing but. universal praise for the magnificence of the production. The season closes on Thursday night'. I received a chatty letter from Mr Alf. Linley this morning in which he states that “Tiny Town” opened its Dominion tour at Invercargill On August 19. The season was a huge success. The show/opened a season in the Garrison Hall, Dunedin, on the 21st, and at exhibition the large hall has been packed with curious

and enthusiastic audiences. Mr Lim, ley says he is sure the tour wilt be a great success in every way. One of the ’ cleverest acts ever ' introduced to New Zealand playgoers is ' undoubtedly ’ that done by the Sleedes in the second act of the pantomime, “Sinbad the Sailor.” It is simply marvellous, and I unhesitatingly advise all your readers to not miss the show. ’ The Theatre Royal was packed to the doors last evening by an audience

anxious to see the performance of the Pechillis, the Chinese acrobats. The Brennan-Fuller management are to be ,congratulated upon the highclass vaudeville they are presenting to New Zealand amusement lovers just now. As long as they present “the goods” big business is sure to be the result. The Green Dandies closed their Wellington season at the Town Hall on Saturday evening. They open a season in Christchurch this evening. Mr Lumsden, the advance agent of

“Tiny Town,” is better - known asCzerny, the conjuror, who toured, the. Dominion about six years ago. : The People’s Picture Palace, which is nearing l completion, has secured a convenient entrance from Manners Street. < The width is 15ft 9in, and the price paid is said to be £250 per foot. This will be the third continuous picture show in Wellington. Mr Borneo , Gardiner, who is this week leaving for Australia en route. for. London, to join the theatrical

profession, was entertained last evening at the Burlington Cafe by the committee which organised the recent complimentary benefit to him. Mr Gardiner was presented with a purse of 110 sovereigns, which was the amount realised by the concert. The Royal Choral Society gave a very fine performance of “The Redemption” in the Town Hall last Friday evening. The soloists were: — Madame Wielaert, soprano; Miss D. Dall, contralto; Mr C. H. Stephens, tenor; Messrs Jas. A. Doherty and

C. V. Mbhr, baritones. Mr Maughan Barnett conducted,, whilst Mr. Horace Hunt presided at the organ.
