HAWKE’S BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, Monday. J. Scott, who is to assume control of Mr H. Whitney’s team at the conclusion of the Grand National gathering is well known in the Bay. Some years back he was for a lengthened period connected with the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s establishment at Karamu, where he was in chage of the brood mares, stallions and youngsters. In days gone by Scott used to be often seen taking a seat on some of the geegees when they were out in quest of stake money. He had a fairly prosperous period in conjunction with Langley the Devil in the old days. Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., has leased Mcrihiko' from Mr H. Hassall, and the son of Catesby will carry the tartan jacket and cap in his new owner’s interests at the National Meeting. Mr Ni Puna, of Arapawanui, who is a great follower of the sport, has at the present time got a remarkably nice cut of a horse in work. He is a three-year-old son of King’s Guest and the Jet d’Eau mare Chuffy. On his outlook he should be able to gal-

lop fast, for his conformation is, of the most approved fashion laid down by the book as regards speed. The Dannevirke Racing Club had a prosperous year, for they made £592 profit on the year’s working. As they have now got on a better footing in regard to the property on which they race, it’s an odds on chance that they will have excellent prospects of increasing their profits as the years roll by. F. D. Jones has been engaged to pilot Mangaroa in the Winter Cup. The chestnut mare has not done anything of a sensational charactei - on the track recently. The younger full brother to Alpheus (Birkenhead —Arethusa) who has had the rough taken off him by A. Wood at Greenmeadows, is under orders to leave for Karamu this week where he will be finished off by Stewart Waddell. Had it have been possible to get A. Oliver to ride Diavolo in the Winter Cup the chances are that he would have seen his engagements out at the National meeting, but as Oliver had a previous claim upon his services (he is riding Serenity in the Cup), Mr Neagle decided to forfeit his contracts. with Diavolo. Mr J. Hennah has bought Julian from D. Kemp. The Merriwee geldng was brought back to Hastings by his new owner last Tuesday night, and is to be given a good holiday. On Wednesday Mr Hennah returned to Trentham to attend to the wants and requirements of Captain Jingle, who will be a hard proposition to down in the Grand National Steeplechase, and he ought to know.

The actrocious climate that has been so prevalent in these parts for the past week has had the effect of preventing any fast work being done on either the Hastings or Napier Park tracks. Trainers at most of the work outs are consequently not giving their pupils any strenuous tasks, for the very simple reason that it is impossible to do so. The annual general meeting of members of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club will be held on Friday. King Mark, the Marco stallion that has recently been acquired by the Hon. J. D. Ormond in England, has been shipped for his new abode. Evadne, the half-sister to Theodore, Sublime and Diavolo, has filled out and come on well as a result of the cessation from toil that has been her lot for the past couple of months. She is being wintered at her owner’s property at Meanee. Cheddar, who has been doing his exercises at Ngatarawa for some timepast, was brought down to Hastings a few days ago and is now one of the equines occupying a box at T. Quinlivan, junior’s, boxes at headquarters. Kirkby, the full-brother to Formby, is being pottered about, and the treatment is evidently having a beneficial effect upon him for he looks brighter and better than has been the case with him for several months. His owner intends to have him prepared for early spring racing. J. Boyd, who at one time had Theodore under his tuition, is in charge of Kirkby. Ventura, who has been one of the idle brigade since she arrived here from Sydney, is a much improved, mare now. It is her owner, Mr E. J. Watts, intention to shortly send her over to the New South Wales capital. Waipureku, the half-sister by Torpedo to Te Puia, will carry Mr W. J. Douglas’ black jacket and heliotrope in her engagements at Riccarton next month, as the part proprietor of Te Mahanga Station has leased the mare from her breeder, J. Munn. J. M. Cameron overlooked the acceptance date for the Winter Cup, for it was. intended to accept with Golden Loop in the event, and that is how it was that the chestnut gelding was not listed amongst the acceptors for the race. The Nile, the two-year-old daughter of Signalman and Horatia, is resting at her owner’s place at Taradale. Mangaroa and Waipureku left by the Monowai for Lyttelton to-night.
