NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB’S WINTER MEETING.

For once in a way the Park was favoured with a brace of really good days for the winter gathering this week, and consequently the attendance was very large. £22,439 was passed through the totalisators, this amount being an increase of £3375 over, the sum handled the previous year. Tyrannic, in the Petane Steeplechase, was the only favourite to score and had a ticket been taken out on each and every horse competing at the meeting a credit balance of nearly twenty pounds would have resulted.

Continuance was allotted the most support in the Napier Steeplechase, but he did hot run up to expectations. Young most certainly rode a most peculiai' race upon him, for at every bend he let him run out and thus ran over a lot of unnecessary ground, in fact it is not stretching the statement to aver that Continuance must have compassed quite a quarter of a mile more than any othei - horse in the contest. Winning honours came the way of Captain Jingle who, nicely handled by Joe O’Connell, got all over Donzel in the last furlong. Continuance was a bad third. Only the three placed horses finished.

In the Park Steeplechase on Thursday, Appin who was one of the new lots, was installed as prime selection by a good margin from Tyrannic who was next in favour. Morohiki set off after Sir Lethe half a mile from home, and at the last brush he was upsides with the leader and a rattling go between the pair all up the straight resulted in favour of Sir Lethe gelding by a length and a half, Tyrannic third, Whimper fourth, Don Carlos fifth, Appin last. The winner, as usual, gave a splendid illustration of fencing, his performance being stamped by bold, clean lepping. Morohiko has got a good future before him in hunter’s events for he is game, can fence well, and has got more turn of pace than the majority of hunters.

Tyrannic, in the Petane Hack Steeplechase, was picked out as the correct way out of the difficulty, with Longboat and the coupled pair, Wirihana and The Chief, next best supported. Wirihana, with Tyrannic lying handy, made the pace from the send-away, and the former breakingdown at the hurdle in the straight allowed the son of Black Jacket to register a ridiculously easy win bj r a good ten lengths from Pukeroa, who was just a clear length ahead of Longboat. Quandary, who was ridden by A. Julian, fell between the two brushes in front of the stand and through the mishap Julian had his collar bone broken.

Julian, who had been doing splendid work in his schooling efforts, was rushed directly betting started on the Motea Hack Hurdles, Bandalero second selection, Faunus third choice.

Nedra, who was one of the outsiders, asserted herself after going six furlongs and from then on never allowed any of the others to get on terms with her capturing comfortably by six lengths from the favourite; Waipureku who was slow to move third, and Waiaio fourth. The winner was bred by Mr G. Hunter, M.P., and is by Renown out of Magic, by Wonderland —Mystery, and carried the racing bannei; cf Mr C. F. Wallace.

Waiaio is the makings of a more than useful one, for he got fourth berth, and next day, in the Waiohiki Hack Hurdles, ran third to Nescot and Bravest. The latter slipped into one of the obstacles half a mile from the pole, and this, therefore, naturally militated against his chances. With the going good, Bravest, who is a full-brother to Corozan, should prove profitable property to- control. Nescott paid a good price, as did Neidra, whose supporters collected a little over a quarter of a century. St. Toney, who was favourite for the Waiohiki Hurdles, led for about a mile, when he surrendered, and never afterwards was any source of trouble to the placed horses. Te Roti was second selection, and Neidra third pick. Neither of the pair were ever nearer than fourth, and they were a long way back, as Nescot

went over the line. Waipureku’s pilot had the misfortune to get hamperel with his stirrup irons, and consequently was not able to assist ' his mount when she most required hi services.

Black Northern was missing from the Ahuriri Hurdles when the numbers were raised in the slide for the event, Waterworks being installed in the first position in the betting, Idealism next choice. The latter ran well in the rear for about ten furlongs, when he made a solid, wellsustained run that had the effect of placing him in the front. Once over the hurdle in the straight it looked any odds on the cerise bearer capturing, but Flynn, taking matters too easy, allowed Elfish to get to him. and, failing to get Idealism moving fast enough, had the mortification of seeing the cast-off of the stables secure the stake. It was, indeed, bad luck for the backers of the cerise bearer, for had he have been kept going the stake and dividend would have come the way of Ideal’s son, Waterworks finished third two lengths in the rear of Idealism.

Black Northern, was one of those that ranged up for the discussion of the Foraite Hurdles, the black gelding having the most support accorded to him of the seven runners, Waterworks and Julian being backed in that order. Bollin asserted himself after going a mile and a-quarter, and, coming on weT within himself, registered an easy victory by a bare two lengths, the favourite the same distance away from Waterworks third. Black Northern got interfered with

when Julian fell, and the mishap must have had a detrimental effect upon him, for with 12.3 on his back it must be conceded that he did not want any trouble to come in his path.

Prince Eddie was the selected article with backers for the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap, Comedian second choice, and Fair Average third favourite. Backers were astray in their forecast, for the best that any of the above could do at the finish was for Comedian to run third, winning honours coming to Blend, who was ably handled by Mr A. Gordon. Manitau came with a great burst of speed in the final half-furlong, and was second; Comedian, who was made a lot of use of, was third, and the favourite fourth.

On Thursday Mr Gordon took the seat on Ngakau in the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap,, and the son of San Fran and Kissmaty was elected first choice, Manitau second selection, and Comedian next best supported. Halfway up the running Alpheus put in his claim, and won by a bare twolengths. Ngakau came again, but. could not reach the bearer of the all cerise uniform; Comedian a fair third. Alpheus is one of the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s New Zealand Cup nominations, and is a five-year-old gelding by Birkenhead from Arethusa r and therefore a full-brother to Ortygia.

Kilostere, who looked shaggy in his coat and moved scratchily in his preliminary, secured the Stewards’ Stakes Handicap from 14 others. He was the absolute outsider of the bunch, and rewarded his partisans with a great dividend, the best of the meeting. The favourite for the event was Bonnie Boy, who was never sighted near the front at any portion of the journey. At the home bend Ladrone pulled to the lead, and when he had looked as if it was all over, Kilostere put in a dash and soon goi on terms with Ladrone. The former just managed to cross the line by a neck margin, Moutoa Girl close up third. San Pluie and Bollin, second and third favourites respectively, were never in the danger zone. On Wednesday the sport was brought to a close with the Settlers’ Hack Handicap, backers going for Prosper hot and heavy. Serenity was

second choice, Diavolo coming next. Ceylon pulled to the front after going tour furlongs, and was never afterwards headed, the verd'ct coming his way from Diavolo hy half a length, Serenity the same distance away third.

The Brooklands Hack Handicap again saw Prosper in most demand, Missile and Diavolo claiming next attention respectively. Prosper was first into the straight, but half a furlong from the post Diavolo put in some of his best, and had the favourite at his mercy. Panthea was putting in excellent efforts on the outside, but the son of Wehikore held his own to the finish, scoring by a full length from Panthea, who was just clear of Manupai. The winner was well handled by B. Deeley, who just timed his run to a nicety. In the Winter Oats, Deeley again piloted the winner, San Pluie, who was the sixth fancied for the event, favouritism resting with Lord Renown, Brown Trout and Mount Victoria being the other ones most enquired about. As they swept into the straight running, Mount Victoria had the best of the argument, and she seemed to be a winner a hundred yards from the chair, but Deeley then got to work upon San Pluie, and the mare responding in fine style, managed to settle Mount Victoria by the barest of necks, Brown Trout a good third. The Newstead Hack Handicap attracted a dozen runners, the favourite selection being Serenity, who headed the next best supported, Ngatimuru, by nearly seventy pounds. The winner turned up in Amaru, who made practically all her own running, and won with ease by a length and a half from Blend, Waikehau third. Those connected with the winner helped themselves liberally to the good price paid by the daughter of The Possible and Violet. D. Deeley and “Joe” O’Connell each piloted a couple of winners, while Mr A. Gordon, Mr J. Ellingham, A. Miller, L. Traill, R. Smart, J. Jones, R. Gray, F. Flynn, and E. Lowe each had a seat upon a conqueror. FIRST DAY. The first day’s racing of the Napier Park winter meeting took place on Wednesday in beautiful weather, and before a large attendance. The course was a trifle heavy, owing to recent rains. A sum of £10,670 was put through the totalisator, as against £9479 on the first day last year.
