SOUTHERN STAGE NOTES.

WELLINGTON-

(By

“Lorgnette.”)

WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. The R-oyal Huddersfield Bellringers open a lour-nights’ season at che Opera House next Saturday evening. The South Island tour of this organisation has been a great financial success. Had a letter from Watts and Lucas from Rarotonga. They have scored a great success in the islands. They join the Aorangi at Papeete en route for Honolulu and San Francisco.

Mr. Irving vvebb, touring manager of the Royal Huddersfield Bellringers, is a brother of Mr. Claude Webb. They are two very clever advance agents.

Mr. Marcus Marcus arrived in town last Thursday co arrange for the opening of Rickards’ vaudeville Company at the Opera House on the 2nd December. Good vaudeville ought to go with a “bang” just now. It is some considerable time now since we’ve had

a real good show of this class. Mr. Phillip Newbury and his wife, Madame Spada, are due to arrive in Wellington on Wednesday for a concert tour of the Dominion. The following are the North Island dates booked for the Royal Huddersfield Bellringers: —Roxton, December 7th; Palmerston North, Bth; Levin, 9th; Marton, 11th; Wanganui, 12th and 13th; Waverley, 14th; Patea, 10th; Eltham, 16th; Hawera, 18th;

Manaia, 19th; Stratford, 19th; New

Plymouth, 21st and 2 2nd; opening at Auckland Boxing night. it is stated that Mr. Alt. Linley, of Linley and Donovan and West’s Royal Pictures, will take up his residence permanently in Australia. The Huddersfield Bellringers, who open their North Island tour at the opera House o n Saturday evening, under the direction of Messrs. J. and N. Tait, is said to be a clever combination, having achieved the distinction of winning twelve competitions out of thirteen contests. In 1901, 1902, and 19 03 the band won first prizes at Manchester, and, owing to a rule in the competitions, they were debarred from entering in 1904. However, in 1905 they again entered, and succeeded in carrying off first honours, also in 19 9 6 and 190 7. Following this up, the band had a remarkable run of successes, winning the championship Cup at Crystal Palace, also scoring in Glasgow, Yorkshire, Bradford, and Slaithwaite, also twenty-five 'gold and thirty-six silver medals. It is probable that the New Comedy company, organised by Mr. Reginald Wykeham and Mr. W. A. Low, will shortly commence a tour of the Dominion.

Mr. Harold Ashton will probably manage the New Zealand tour of “The Speckled Band” and “Alias Jimmy Valentine.”

It is on the cards that Mr. Claude Webb will be appointed as touring representative of one of the J.C.W. attractions.

It has now been decided that Mr. Richard Stewart will manage the New Zealand tour of the New Comic Opera ■ Company, opening in Wellington. on • December 21st with ‘ ‘The Balkan c Princess” and “The Girl in the Train.”
