WANGANUI.

(From Our Own Coi respondent.) WANGANUI. November 7One well-known local owner made several hundred over Bridge’s success in the New Zealand Cup. Had Boanerges landed the Stewards he would have scooped in a great deal more. Shannon Lass and Astraea have been doing a lot of solid work during the last week, and this morning put in a fast gallop, in which both shaped

well, particularly Astraea, who was never in such fettle as she is nowt Raynor is taking both mares to Carterton for the meeting there on the 9th and 10th, and they should both rim well. Sir Prize, late Kilmarnock, has been nominated for the big events at the Feilding meeting. He is reported to be going fairly well again at Hawera, after his long spell, and is apparently soundThe price paid by Bridge in the New Zealand Cup came as a big surprise to most backers here, as it was expected that he would go out favourite for that event. The time recorded—3.2s—proves him to be quite a top-notcher while Diabolo is also entitled to great credit for carrying his extra weight into second place in such a fast run race. By the way, some appear inclined to doubt the time, but it must be remembered that the conditions were eminently suitable for record-making, jit will probably be remembered by some that Tiralleur was credited with having shown himself equal to running the two miles in 3.26 prior to the Melbourne Cup, in which he came to grief, and for which event he was backed for a ton of money on the strength of his trial. Moose and Whimper were sent for a solid gallop over a mile on Saturday, the latter having all the best of the go. Moose was making a big noise in the early stages, and later on this got worse, until finally the gelding was eased up, as he was so bad. It would seem almost that the Sbu’-wester gelding has ended his days of usefulness on the track, as his throat troubles him so much. However, he has been nominated for the hurdle events at the Feilding meeting, so that evidently hopes are entertained that he will get over his ai’ment.

The nominations received for the Feilding meeting are very large, and there is every prospect of the gathering being as successful as any previous spring meeting of the club, which is saying a lot. All of the events have filled well, and some fine racing may be looked for on the 30th inst and Ist December. The Fifth Feilding__Stakes, to be decided on November 30, should be one of the best races at the club’s forthcoming meeting. Those left in after the final payment include Tribulation, Provocation, Inspection, Lord Kelvin, Kohinoor, Countermine, Tenterhook. Masterpiece, Madam Madcap. Peter Pan. br c by Sir Laddo — Cecile, Excel, Hermia, Formby, ch f by Advance —Seagull, ch fby Advance—Good Luck. Gipsy Belle, and Polymorphous. St. Bill’s win in the Shorts at Auckland on Saturday did not benefit many Wanganui backers, though it came as no surprise, as the St. Clements gelding had been galloping well before leaving here, as had a’so North East, and Egotist. North East should land a race before he returns.
