CANTERBURY.

(From OaF Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. November 10. Formeden, by Multiform—Otterden, Acrostic, by Multiform —Problem, and Directoire, by Wariki —Queen Anne, will be sold by auction at Tattersalls’ on Monday next. Dily* White, a three-year-old filly, by Multiform, out of that, high-class mare Cruciform, commenced her racing career at Ashburton, but failed to gain a place. She started in the Ashley Handicap at Riccarton yesterday, but Pilgrim’s Way, who has the reputation of being one of the fastest sprinters in training at Riccarton, was voted a good thing for the event. She failed to run up to expectations, and was beaten by Domino, Silver Bullet and Colleen Mary. Hawke’s Bay stables are having a great run at the Cup meeting. Bridge annexed the Cup, Theodore the Criterion Handicap, Kopu ran third in the Cup and second to Prim in the Metropolitan Handicap, 'Humming Bird won the Riccarton Welter, Miscount! ran second In' /the Welcome Stakes, Bliss got third in the Stewards’ Handicap, Birkdale ran second to Danube in the Derby, and Morecombe occupied a similar position in the Epsom High-weight Handicap, being beaten by that smart fiilly Dearest.

In the Spring Hurdles on the first day, four put of the eight starters came to grief. Murtagh, who rode Xavier when he fell at the first fence, was very badly knocked about, and had to be sent to the hospital- He is still in a bad way, but hopes are entertained of his recovery. There has been a lot of talk in racing circles over Bridge’s s time in the Cup. For many years C.J.C. has had the services of an experienced timekeeper, but owing to il'ness, he was unable to attend the Cup meeting. A young man with very little experience was appointed to the position. It is stated by those who ought to know and who also timed the race, that the time was nearer 3.27 than 3.25.

Sunburnt was badly left in the Stewards’ Handicap, but was one of the first to leave the mark in the Juvenile Plate. He is reported to be a very bad colt at thb barrier. In both his races he had the rogue’s hood on.

The field in this year's Derby was one of the smaPest on record, and probably the presence of Danube, who had won the Wanganui Guineas and Champion Plate at Wellington, was was mainly responsible for the big weeding out.
